All out on March 18th. Thelma & Louise Last Tango in Paris Dead Man Walking Big Momma's House Big Momma's House II Rain Man Four Weddings And a Funeral So far I've decided on Rain Man and Four Weddings. Not sure about the others. Big Momma's House anyone?? ![]() -RD- |

Are you in Japan? Almost if not all of them have already been announced or released in the US.

I am living in Japan. My wife is Japanese so we watch movies with the original audio (English if it's a hollywood movie) and Japanese subtitles.
I wish the US releases would have Japanese subs on the disc but as far as I know, they never do. Luckily the wait for these titles like Rain Man isn't too long... -RD- |

Sometimes they do, they generally don't list it on the packaging though and the player will only show the options if its set to Japanese. The media companies don't want the bottom to fall out of the (insanely pricey) Japanese media market. But it's far and few between, you could also look at other Asian "A" market discs, often Thai discs and sometimes Hong Kong discs from the likes of Fox or Disney for example are the same.

yes they are pricey. I want to buy some Ghibli on bluray but the price for just one movie is crazy, double the price of a regular new movie. I am tempted though.
Anyway, thanks for the tip, will look out for those Asian discs, is there anyway of finding out what disc has what subs on it? Would need to know that before buying. |

A good tip for finding discs with the Japanese subs is to look for companies that hold the rights to a title over a large portion of "Region A", Fox, Warner, Disney and Universal are good for this. Sony does this on rare occasions (the Australian version of "The Wicker Man 2006" is the same as the Japanese release) but generally releases separate discs for the Japanese market (like my Almost Famous UK disc which has subtitles for Chinese, Thai and Korean but not Japanese). For the Ghibli titles if you don't mind giving up some extras and only having Japanese audio (ie no Japanese subs) you can look at the Hong Kong and Tawain releases, if you don't mind having a lossy Japanese audio track you could also import the US versions. Sometimes for releases in other Asian markets the Japanese subtitle options will be listed such as here on the Hong Kong release of Starship Troopers and the Thai release, the Thai release even mentions on the very bottom of the back that the disc is shared with the Japanese release. Hope that helps! Last edited by knifethrower; 02-08-2011 at 04:35 PM. |
