Excellent.
I'm expecting it to be the 2.55:1 CinemaScope version, but it would be nice to also get the 1.37:1 Academy Ratio version, too. Not likely though. Last edited by Deciazulado; 02-16-2011 at 08:33 PM. Reason: Academy Ratio is 1.37 |

Because they were filmed separately with different compositions between characters/objects in the shots so they'd have to restore it twice, and for such a small addition it just wouldn't be worth it. The Platinum Edition DVD included a 4:3 version but it was not the original Academy ratio version, it was just the 2.55:1 version with the sides chopped off.

If Disney doesn't want to take the time to restore the Academy version, they could always just stick it in a PiP window ala The Robe. They wouldn't be above doing that since the Work-in-Progress PiP for Beauty and the Beast was also rough looking.
While this is one of my lesser favorites in the Diamond Collection, I still think it's a great film and will be pleased to own it. The 2006 DVD, despite some softness, was gorgeous, so I have no doubt the BD will be likewise. One thing I'm wondering is whether this will receive a new restoration or if it'll recycle the 2006 one. Apparently the Bambi BD is the same restoration as the Platinum DVD, so are all of Disney's restoration efforts from 2005 onward getting ported to BD? I guess we'll find out with both this film and Cinderella next year. I'm happy with how Disney's post-2005 restorations turned out save for some curiosities on Cinderella and the somewhat subpar job on The Little Mermaid by Technicolor. If they can tweak Cindy a bit and let Lowry handle Mermaid from scratch, they can recycle everything else.

Where did you read that? Is there a reason why 2005 is key to not restore films?

All the Disney restorations from 2004 and previous have been redone for Blu-ray (Snow White, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Alice in Wonderland, Sleeping Beauty). Bambi was the first Platinum Edition to receive a Lowry restoration. Before then, only Pinocchio and Alice in Wonderland had work done by that company. The difference between those two clean ups and the rest that followed is noticeable since from Bambi onward, the new digital masters were rock solid. Pinocchio's 2002 restoration and Alice in Wonderland'a 2004 one had noticeable image fluctuations, film artifacts, and somewhat drabber colors (though all this was still leaps and bounds over the previous transfers). Bambi, however, was squeaky clean, stable, and vivid; the same goes for everything else (save for Little Mermaid, which wasn't a Lowry job) all through 101 Dalmatians. I don't know if the methods radically changed at Lowry in between Alice in 2004 and Bambi in 2005 or what. So if the Bambi restoration has been recycled, will the same be true of Cinderella, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, 101 Dalmatians, and The Jungle Book? The new Alice transfer certainly fits in more snuggly with those than the 2004 one did.

However, what about Fox and the Hound etc? I know many received updated releases that were generally exactly the same except for transfer, are those transfers as good as the Platinums? Or would they have to be redone again? Thoughts? edit: What about Black Cauldron and Great Mouse Detective which were DVD only last year? Oh and last year's Alice? Which restoration was that?
