There's no need to pay the $80 to import from Japan unless there's something specific you want from that release.
The UK release is set for October 18 and I doubt a US release is far behind if you don't like the £16.99 price. I was tempted to order from Japan before I saw this, but now I'll wait. Last edited by Steve46; 08-20-2010 at 02:15 PM. |

HMV.co.uk has it for £15.99 and ships worldwide. Hopefully Amazon UK lists it and matches the £10.99 price. |

Even with it discounted to a pretty cheap price (£9.30=AU$15 on Amazon.co.uk) I'm still unsure if I want it to replace my DVD. Really isn't my personal favourite & everytime I try to watch it I get bored (first time was good but that was it)

Yeah, I think so too. The "noise" on the Japanese version doesn't look right for film noise either, although I might be a bit naive. It looks really odd, not like film grain I'm used to (from actual film - although live action, I've not actually looked at real cel photography) - like it is multicolored. It it more like to me like fine analog TV snow as opposed to film grain. I'm sure I'm wrong, but it doens't loook like grainy still film or motion film stuff I've seen.

No. But it doesn't look right still. Like the optimum one is still grainy, but the Japanese one looks like someone turned the contrast up on the grain, or they overilluminated it when scanning and had to compensate, like it is really exaggerated.

I'm into both approaches. IMO if it's considered a classic film; one that stands as representative of it's time and oeuvre.. in that case I'm into the, "make it look like it was intended to look upon initial release," idea.
But other than that, I'd be lying if I didn't admit that I love the detail that today's reissues can conjure. All in all, if the original creator (or creative team) gets to decide how they want their stuff displayed (apart from a monetary motivation) I'm happy with whatever they want. In this case, I think an absolutely exemplary creator got to have his say; and thus the blu-ray gets to look as perfect as it does. As far as Miyazaki's films go though, I'm dying to have commentaries by Miyazaki. Seriously, I'd buy these again if I could listen to him discuss the various motivations and inspirations for the myriad ideas in his films. Edit: this is completely unrelated, but I'm wondering if Hideaki Anno's Evangelion was at all inspired by the time of the giants that Nausicaa presupposes. In a way, Eva can be seen as a prequel to Nausicaa.. heh, I love these films! Last edited by finalmattasy; 02-02-2011 at 11:59 PM. |
