The original Ipods took a few years to reach their potential, I suspect the same for APple TV. With just a software update they are now doing 720p with 5.1. Apple and Steve Jobs are inevators, there is no reason to not think that 1080p is coming within the year.

I won't debate compression/bandwidth/it will never fly, just look at the facts. Everything that he sets out to do he makes happen. He realizes the quality of bluray, so I would think that is where he's set the bar.

Also, Apple has just today added Blu-ray support native to the MAC OSX, with a free upgrade, as I am sure you all saw in the news reports today.
I am excited about this since I think it means I will finally be able to run a BD burner on my mac!
Plus we now know that mac will release a BD drive, most likely later this year.

As for the appleTV, for another renting option I think this is a smart choice. True it is not 1080, but at least it's 720p. AND they added 5.1 surround sound! I am not sure I want to do this myself (my HDMI ports are full), but it is far cheaper than going to the video store, especially if they don't have Blu-ray yet or if I can see a Universal or Paramount HD DVD exclusive title. But I still prefer Blu-ray any day.
Nope, haven't seen any such reports. Link please? AFAIK using a BD burner has been possible for some time, at least using 3rd party software like Toast?

I may have read into this too much, but after looking at it again, it looks like a 3rd party group is adding Blu-ray capability to the mac. However this is proof that the MAC OSX is capable of authoring and burning Blu-ray discs.

Also, burning but thats it. I want to make BD menus and use BD+. I want to be able to make a fully capable Blu-ray movie.

Apple TV has no competitor. They will eventually compete with Netflix, but it has nothing to do with renting physical discs. People will buy Apple TV and a HD disc player, or one or the other. Apple TV, I will be buying since I can rent HD movies instantaneously, plus all the other Apple TV features for my itunes needs. Apple TV is ahead already since Netflix doesn't have boxes for sale yet.

Alas, my movies are currently all animated. I am an animator (both 3D and 2D) but I want to work on both animation and live action.
I am looking for a good camera as well, but the only ones of the quality I want are too expensive. However I will continue to do what I can with this. I want to make highly detailed animations for Blu-ray.
Once I am able to do this, I will be sure to post it in here for sale. Until then it will be an ongoing project.

Update: Crunchgear says the secret's out, and it's going to be integrated Redcode inside Final Cut Studio. This means there will be native Red support, editing that 4k video image at a lower resolution so you won't have to tax your box looking at 4k pixels whenever you're editing.
This is the super secret thing they revealed at the Final Cut Pro group today.
It is for a digital 4k camera that is very high quality and demanding, so this way you can see it at a lower resolution without sacrificing quality or speed on your computer.

No Blu-ray was mentioned.

In its review of predictions and their accuracy or otherwise www.macrumors.com still reports that:
"In looking back at the sources of the most accurate rumors, we also find enticing reports of items that didn't come true at Macworld, but did come from credible sources.

The MacBook Pro updates are certainly coming -- and soon."

Although very far from certain, it would seem that that release would also be an opportune time for other updates - Blu-ray support perhaps? But maybe that's getting hopes up higher than is warranted.Certainly there'll be more than a few watching closely.
Don't forget the BD-R, custom Blu-ray and Pro video markets where Blu-ray also shines.
