I seriously doubt this will be locked. The original release wasn't plus some of the languages are in Region B territories (Italian, German).

I guess, but I do hope for a UK release, I don't do importing much, and don't want to buy the DVD.

I seriously want this, and don't want to get the DVD even if it's only like £5-8. The UK had better get a release eventually, importing is not really my thing.

Wish my copy hadn't shipped or I would have cancelled. This is really a joke.

Well, in that case, if it's a substandard BD release, then paying for a cheap DVD doesn't sound too bad at all.

I'm very disappointed. I never anticipated that they would hobble this release and sold my copy of the original Blu-ray. This cost close to $80 with shipping, and they couldn't be bothered to include HD audio? Not much I can do about it now, as my order has already shipped, but I went ahead and canceled my order for Hoshi o Ou Kodomo.

I would rather have this on blu and have a much improved PQ as opposed to having a DVD only copy. Since this will probably not get another English friendly blu release anytime soon.

Well, each to their own. I suspect that if and when Manga UK is able to release it on Blu, it will be decent enough for me to buy.

I watched this last night, and aside from the lossy audio and Engrish-y subtitles in a few spots, it is a nice release. I'm glad I didn't cancel just because the movie is that good. The art is so detailed it really must be seen in HD. Yeah, this release could have been better had they not gone the cheap route and used a BD-25, but it's a title I can see myself revisiting many times, so that alone makes it worth it.

Bought the DVD £5.99, not a bad price, instead of importing a somewhat disappointing BD release. I'll be waiting for an excellent BD release. Until then, DVD will have to do.

I'm gonna dig up this old thread instead of making a new one. Can someone please explain how this Blu-Ray release is somewhat 'disappointing'? Aren't most blu-rays 25gb's anyway? Also regarding the audio? The Japanese one has more bits, isn't that good? The superior way to watch the film in the 1st place? or is 3 digit KB's low in quality? If so is it noticable?

What would have been the preferred release in terms of spec?

The additional movies on the disc are SD? - are they available elsewhere? Were they ever released in HD in first place?

Thanks to anyone who helps me, as I do wanna see this film in HD. Netflix streaming was good, but I imagine it even HD'ee'er.. on disc lol

cheers

I'm not super knowledgeable about all this stuff, so I can't answer your questions as to the specs, but all of the special features (including the short films) should be in SD. They have never been released in HD.

I actually just bought the original BD less than a week ago.... I chose that edition because it was cheaper and had no need for the subtitles or English track, but I totally didn't do enough research because I completely didn't know about the inclusion of the other two films on this newer release! For some reason I assumed the special features would be the same... I mean, it's not like they're in HD, so I'm not too bummed, but had I known, I would have forked over the extra cash since I don't own those films.

I'm not an audiophile and don't have a great audio setup, so I'm not sure how important the audio issue is for me. Though I suppose its good to have the superior version just in case things change for me in the future...

Thanks for reply. It seems your version has the same audio as the international release. Both are Japanese: LPCM 4.0 max. Meaning it's not complete surround sound. (Which I don't have anyway, I listen with my DT 770 PRO's) I think I understand how it could have been better now.

Many blu-ray films are actually released on a 50gb disc - meaning the feature film can be totally uncompressed in quality. Which the Japanese version actually is. But then again the feature film itself isn't very long is it? So maybe it isn't an issue. Can anyone confirm? However I don't really understand why they used a 25G disc with the 2 extra films and extra subtitles and audio versions :S
