India/Bollywood Baatsha blu-ray

Looks like the Baatsha blu-ray starring Rajinikanth (aka Baasha) is coming out soon. It is going to be Pyramid International's first Blu-ray release. I didn't have a good opinion about quite a few of their Tamil DVD releases to begin with, but I was just hoping for the best with their new blu-ray endeavor. Unfortunately, the Inlay coverart mentions that the audio is NOT HD - we only have Dolby Digital 5.1 Who knows what the PQ is going to be like?

I looked at the coverart provided by a blu-ray seller - he has started accepting preorders for the Baatsha blu-ray. The file size of the coverart image was too big to attach to the post (PDF format) - else I would've done that!

Apart from Endhiran, the one Rajini movie of recent years that I found likable on the whole was Kuselan, which nicely adapts the Krishna-Sudama fable and even shows a bit of the negative side of his being one of South India's biggest film stars. Sadly that one was, I think, not accepted by his typical fans.

Kuselan was a remake of the Malayalam film Kadha Parayumbol. KP was also remade in Hindi as Billu.

Baassha is a movie released in 90s movie for which negatives and so forth do not exsist any longer what i can tell u after seeing the blu ray myself is the best practices have been used to make this product the best possible HD Experience of Basha that would be avaliable for this Product.

Also how can a movie released in 90s have DTS i am not sure about it does any old movies from bollywood 92-95 have DTS on them.
Most of us realize the limitations of the source, especially for catalog releases. Look at how much time and effort has already gone into bringing Kandukondain Kandukondain (a 2000 release) onto the blu-ray format. It is still an ongoing process. Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love (1996) was a disaster release on blu-ray by Eagle Home Entertainment. Quality conscious studios like Disney, Criterion, etc. release REALLY old titles too, and the releases are phenomenal. For example, titles like Sleeping Beauty and Pinocchio (1940) have undergone extensive, immaculate frame-by-frame remastering and the restoration shows that the film's colors have been completely reinvigorated. Regarding Lossless audio, again I can quote the same examples. For a film like Sleeping Beauty which was released more than 50 years ago, sound technicians restored every last note to remove hisses, pops, and other artifacts to get a clean, smooth sound. The restored audio was then newly remixed in lossless DTS HD-MA 7.1, that really lends a superior experience to the film. Look at Criterion's transfer of The Music Room (Jalsaghar) by Satyajit Ray which was originally released in 1958 - the original camera negative of The Music Room had been destroyed (though a second-generation fine-grain master positive was made directly from it). But, the quality of the high-definition transfer Criterion has used for this Blu-ray release is indeed very impressive. According to Criteroion, the monaural soundtrack was remastered at 24-bit from the original 35mm soundtrack print and Clicks, thumps, hiss, and hum were manually removed using Pro Tools HD. Crackle was attenuated using AudioCube's integrated workstation thus giving us a Bengali LPCM 1.0 audio track.

The whole point of this post is to illustrate what global standards are and not to hide behind a fig leaf of an excuse saying that Baatsha is an older release which came out in 1995. If a movie from the 50s can have a lossless DTS HD-MA 7.1 soundtrack, I am sure a movie from the 90s can have one too. Hundreds of Hollywood blu-ray releases from the 80s and 90s all have lossless audio. Obviously, we'll have to wait and see whether Pyramid has done justice to this exceptional movie. I'll be very pissed if it turns out to be a mediocre release on blu-ray, like some of their DVDs. I guess we'll know soon..

Pyramid AV Blu-Ray of BAASHA Releasing SOON. By Christmas hopefully. And YES- we are cleaning up whatever source we have access to- be it negative or positive. Will they be Sivaji The Boss quality? NO. But given the poor state of film preservation in india- they look as good as can be

DO NOT USE A 35mm POSTIVE...the colour correction is designed for projection only...not for Home Video. Grading them on 2K Da-Vinci will look very bad in HD.

There must be a Interpostive source out there...

Also, how about releasing Nayakan - the best Tamil film ever made!!!!

Never liked "Baasha". It was a weak copy of the more superior Hindi film "Hum"

Anyway, I'm glad someone is releasing classic Tamil films.... Hopefully, this will get Ayngaran to compete and release thier own classics....

Sunny- If the negative is gone, we HAVE to use a positive- I will have to check with pyramid on what source we are using. As for the sound- originally PCM, now DD!
