Looks like the Baatsha blu-ray starring Rajinikanth (aka Baasha) is coming out soon. It is going to be Pyramid International's first Blu-ray release. I didn't have a good opinion about quite a few of their Tamil DVD releases to begin with, but I was just hoping for the best with their new blu-ray endeavor. Unfortunately, the Inlay coverart mentions that the audio is NOT HD - we only have Dolby Digital 5.1
Who knows what the PQ is going to be like?

I looked at the coverart provided by a blu-ray seller - he has started accepting preorders for the Baatsha blu-ray. The file size of the coverart image was too big to attach to the post (PDF format) - else I would've done that!

Apart from Endhiran, the one Rajini movie of recent years that I found likable on the whole was Kuselan, which nicely adapts the Krishna-Sudama fable and even shows a bit of the negative side of his being one of South India's biggest film stars. Sadly that one was, I think, not accepted by his typical fans.

The whole point of this post is to illustrate what global standards are and not to hide behind a fig leaf of an excuse saying that Baatsha is an older release which came out in 1995. If a movie from the 50s can have a lossless DTS HD-MA 7.1 soundtrack, I am sure a movie from the 90s can have one too. Hundreds of Hollywood blu-ray releases from the 80s and 90s all have lossless audio. Obviously, we'll have to wait and see whether Pyramid has done justice to this exceptional movie. I'll be very pissed if it turns out to be a mediocre release on blu-ray, like some of their DVDs. I guess we'll know soon..

Pyramid AV Blu-Ray of BAASHA Releasing SOON. By Christmas hopefully. And YES- we are cleaning up whatever source we have access to- be it negative or positive. Will they be Sivaji The Boss quality? NO. But given the poor state of film preservation in india- they look as good as can be

There must be a Interpostive source out there... Also, how about releasing Nayakan - the best Tamil film ever made!!!! Never liked "Baasha". It was a weak copy of the more superior Hindi film "Hum" Anyway, I'm glad someone is releasing classic Tamil films.... Hopefully, this will get Ayngaran to compete and release thier own classics.... |

Sunny- If the negative is gone, we HAVE to use a positive- I will have to check with pyramid on what source we are using. As for the sound- originally PCM, now DD!

As long as the PQ is decent enough, I can live with the DD audio. Keeping my fingers crossed!
