I'm about to buy and build a HTPC and I want it to play blu-ray 3D discs, mainly region b locked ones since I already have a ps3 playing my region a and region free discs. I've been reading stories of how blu-ray is supported on windows 7, but not officially by Microsoft and I'd have to use 3rd party software to play movies. Also some people have said that the copy protection is so bad that new movies are unplayable when they come out, and it takes a while for the programs to be updated to play them. I really don't want to buy a $80 disc drive that is only partially useful. Is it really that difficult to just play movies and burn data on blu-ray?

No, not at all. I have experienced none of the problems you mentioned. I use Cyberlink PowerDVD 11 Ultra and 3D blus have played for me on release date. I have even played imported blu's (such as Sucker Punch), months before Aussie release.
I dunno if you were wondering about hardware? My specs are; Intel i3, 4gig RAM, 1TB HD, 10x LG BD ROM LG w2363D monitor, Logitech 5.1 surround (right speaker blew at less than 12 months) Running Windows 7 and PowerDVD (ver. 11 Ultra is the only PowerDVD that runs 3D blu, that I know of. There are other, cheaper programs, but I don't know if these are the ones that have the issues you speak of.) Hope I've helped. Good luck, and please report back you progress and pics when you're done! |

Thanx, I guess I read some old threads or just plain wrong people.
One thing I was wondering is the type of burner I need to play 3D blus. I read somewhere that the drive doesn't have to say it plays 3D to actually play 3D. That any blu-ray burner drive 4X or higher will play 3D fine and it's up to the graphics card to perform the 3D output. |

So as you are about to buy all the internals of your HTPC, what is your spec??
I'd be throwing in a amd HD7970 into it for sure! |

I got a i5-2500
8 gigs of ram 160 gig HDD salvaged from a previous desktop, and a 2nd HDD at 500 gigs Sapphire Radeon 6870 OCZ 700 W PSU Samsung UN46D6400 3DTV Windows 7 I already ordered the parts and hopefully they arrive by friday. Now, concerning the Blu-ray burner. Now, does it have to explicitly say it has 3D playback, or will any blu-ray burner do? |

Looks like your just building a decent PC, then adding a dual OS boot prehap's for the HTPC activity??
Right, this page will tell you what bluray player spec you need. http://www.cyberlink.com/products/po...n_US.html?&r=1 See Disc Drive & the 3d info 'sections' as its quite complicated. ![]() Maybe peruse this also; http://www.cyberlink.com/stat/bd-support/enu/index.jsp |
