Just as an example of how much help I needed with crossovers and the progress made to get to a decent understanding with a lot of patient help I'm going to link to a thread I just finished up at DIYAudio on my own crossovers.
I hope its ok to link to them BD. Its all in the name of advancing knowledge. http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/multi...e-request.html

Hey guys, I need some guidance and advice. I need to upgrade my speakers and the one I want are just way off my price range. But I also refuse to pay $ for speakers I really don't want. I've been thinking about building my own. I think I can get better quality for less $ if I built them right? (correct me if I'm wrong).
If thats the case then, where do I start? I know a want to start with a pair of 2 way floor standing speakers. But the problem is I don't know anything about speakers building and even less about wood and finishes (which is really important). Can somebody point me in the right direction? I have the will and patience for a project like this. |

Honestly I might recommend the tri-trix setup from Parts-Express, its an all inclusive kit and gives you a good general concept of speaker building. It includes the crossover components the pre-fabricated woodworking and the drivers and ports. Its fairly cheap and from everything I've read its an outstanding floor speaker.
http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=300-702 If those are too pre-done for you. I can search around for some true from scratch building recipes for 2-ways there are tons of proven ones out there. Hope it helps Istoc

Thank you!! I think this is a pretty good idea. I like it that there is lots of help for crossover assembly (which is what scares me). The price range was exactly what I was looking for. I think is a good way to get my feet wet on speaker building. Thanks for your time and help.

Damn, I have to pay $355 for shipping. I live in Puerto Rico. I guess that option is out of the question. That being the case, looks like I'm going to have to start from scratch because the cabinets are what really increases the shipping cost. I imagine I can still order speaker parts from Partsexpress. What do you guys recommend? |

Honestly Paolo, if I had to recommend a first build I would direct ya towards Folded Horn Full Range builds. They take out the crossover completely leaving ya with some basic woodworking and some understanding of how the speaker enclosure works or can work.
Let me grab a few examples for ya. If you are dead set on 2-way I can find some. However as a first project I personally won't approve of a 3-way design. They can be extremely convoluted and difficult.

Here is a good folded horn design, I haven't personally made it however it is effective and with the right driver choice I'm sure could be unbelievable sounding.

Big Daddy:
I see you have full range speakers on top of your subwoofers. Are the vibrations coming from the sub not affecting the full range speakers sound? Thanks.

They are attached to each other at an angle with minimum contact. They are like any large super tower speakers. Also, the subwoofers are well damped and have rubber legs to minimize vibrations.
