I did not see the event myself but several local retailers told me they had significant sales at midnight of the release. I'll have chance to go by my usual major retailers later today to get some sore of anecdotal feeling for the depletion of inventory and product mix that was sold. Obviously the sales will be above average for the week for DVD and Blu-ray sales.

A 'Twilight' and a 'Tramp'

7 Feb, 2012
By: John Latchem

Walmart's 'Lady and the Tramp' with dish set

Ordinarily, Disney’s Blu-ray re-release of Lady and the Tramp would have attracted the vast majority of retail attention its first week out.

Indeed, Target offered an $8 discount with purchase of the new Blu-ray and one of several previous Disney Blu-rays. Best Buy offered a Lady plush, as well as a $5 discount if customers turned in an old Disney DVD. And Walmart offered the Blu-ray packaged with a dinner bowl, fork and spoon.

Then there’s the release of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn —Part 1 on disc.

Target went the most all-out with its in-store displays and advertising. The chain’s weekly ad circular included a four-page insert of “Twilight” merchandise, including tie-in books, CDs, T-shirts, jewelry, cellphone accessories and more. Target also promoted a contest to stay at the island resort featured in the film, at http://www.IsleEsmeSweepstakes.com.

Target has a special limited-edition two-DVD set that includes prop flowers from the film’s wedding scene, and endcap displays in the electronics department displayed most of the tie-in products as video screens played invitations from the cast to attend Target’s midnight sale to see a preview of Breaking Dawn — Part II.

Best Buy’s “Twilight” exclusives include a Valentine’s Day sleeve for the new DVD and a steelbook case for the Blu-ray.

Projections: 'Twilight' Set to Again Rule Sales

13 Feb, 2012
By: John Latchem

Two notorious trends will come to a head the week ending Feb. 12 in a battle of past and present for the top spot.

Disney’s re-releases of its classic animated films as Blu-ray “Diamond Editions” usually take the top spot their first week in stores.

This week, however, Lady and the Tramp will have a lot of competition from the Saturday disc release of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1. All “Twilight” films have debuted on disc on a Saturday, and all have topped the sales chart their first week in stores despite the short lead time.

Projected Top 3 Sellers for Week Ending 2/12/2012

1 The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1 Summit New

2 Lady and the Tramp: Diamond Edition Disney New

3 A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas Warner New

Breaking Dawn Part 1 Blu-ray and DVD Sales Excepted to Match Eclipse
February 12, 2012

Share
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 made its home video debut on Friday night as fans lined up at stores for a chance to get their hands on the Blu-ray or DVD version as they went on sale at midnight release parties around North America.
Lionsgate, who recently purchased Twilight studio Summit Entertainment, expects sales of Breaking Dawn starring Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner on disc format to at least meet, if not possibly exceed sales put up by the previous film in the series, Eclipse. In its first 48 hours of availability, roughly 3 millions copies of Eclipse on Blu-ray and DVD were sold. The number of Breaking Dawn Blu-ray and DVD copies shipped is not available, but likely is around the same number made available to retailers for Eclipse.

Looking at the history of Twilight films on Blu-ray, Breaking Dawn Part 1 will have a long way to go if it wants bragging rights for the franchise. The original Twilight has sold approximately 10.7 million copies on home video. The sequel, New Moon have moved 7.5 million, while Eclipse checks in at 7.1 million. If Breaking Dawn Part 1 sales should continue to downward trend of its predecessors, Breaking Dawn Part 2 should have a legitimate chance of reversing the trend as it draws the five-film series to a close.

The first sales numbers for Breaking Dawn on Blu-ray should be available on Monday or early next week.

Midnight Madness For ‘Breaking Dawn’ DVD

By NIKKI FINKE | Sunday February 12, 2012 @ 11:31pm PST

Sneak Peek At Twilight ‘Breaking Dawn Pt 2′

SUNDAY: Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 on opening day starting at midnight Saturday sold an estimated 2.4 million DVD and Blu-ray units. That’s 15% ahead of its predecessor Eclipse. Digital sales on Saturday also were 45% higher than Eclipse for electronic sell-through, and 160% higher than Eclipse via video on demand.

SATURDAY: Amazing how some aging franchises can still cause a frenzy. There were long lines inside and outside retailers when this second-to-last Twilight Saga film Breaking Dawn – Part 1 began selling its DVDs, Blu-ray disks, as well as video-on-demand and electronic sell-thru at 12:01 AM Saturday across North America. Summit Entertainment partnered with Target and Walmart and held “midnight” fan events for the 3,000 select stores. Exclusive sneak peeks at footage from Breaking Dawn – Part 2 will be showing at some Targets nationwide. Walmart has an exclusive version of the Part 1 DVD (called ‘Bella’s Wedding Dress Edition’) while Target has a limited edition DVD (with a sweepstakes for fans to win a trip to the “real Isle Esme” resort, site of Bella’s & Edward’s honeymoon. The DVD also comes with a limited edition collectible: authentic prop flowers from the movie wedding scene encased in an acrylic keepsake. Wanne bet that next year Summit will include Bella’s baby afterbirth as a keepsake with Part 2‘s DVD? Anything for a buck.

The-Numbers DVD estimates for Twilight Eclipse back in Dec 2010

The week zero IIRC was for midnight Friday, Saturday and Sunday sales in the first week of December, week after Thanksgiving holiday season.

Blu--ray sales IIRC marketshare for the first week was low 20%-25% I think NV wise and I'll post up the matching week in 2010's data link shortly.

I'll also post up the matching week from Feb 2011 as well.

Lionsgate: 'Breaking Dawn' Sales Hit 3.2 Million Units

13 Feb, 2012
By: Chris Tribbey

Sales of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1 hit an estimated 3.2 million units during its first weekend of release, partly thanks to midnight release parties at major retailers.

Disc sales of Breaking Dawn were up 18% compared to first weekend sales for The Twilight Sage: Eclipse, the third film in the franchise.

Electronic sellthrough was up more than 47% to approximately 50,000 transactions, and VOD was up 142%, with approximately 80,000 transactions
.

“The incredible fan support for the characters and story that author Stephenie Meyer has created never ceases to impress,” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group co-chairmen Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger said in a statement. “We thank all of the fans for continuing their journey with us beyond the big screen and look forward to bringing you Breaking Dawn — Part 2 later this year.”

The final film in the franchise is due in theaters Nov. 16.

Both Target and Walmart offered exclusive versions of the DVD, which had a higher price point compared with earlier films in the franchise.

Breaking Dawn — Part 1 has grossed more than $700 million worldwide at the box office.

My local Target staff told me today they sold over 200 DVD and Blu-ray units of Twilight Breaking Dawn Part I on midnight on Friday and more over the weekend.

Not sure what the Blu-ray marketshare will be though as there was a $12 price difference between the lowest DVD sku and the Blu-ray versions they were selling. All the Walmart guys today and the Best Buy guys today could tell me was that they sold through most of the display inventory over the weekend and that it was by far the best selling DVD of the year, but we already knew that.

At my local Target FWIW at the check isles most of the DVDs were depleted but the Blu-ray versions were gone. At the center of the store isle display prepack it was stocked mostly with DVD units it looked like and most were gone but the electronic media DVD section end cap had mostly Blu-ray's sold through with a full stock of DVD like it had just been replenished. So a mixed bag for the sku sales mix between Blu-ray and DVD with obviously more DVD sold but no real good idea on the marketshare split.

Best Buy seemed pretty ravaged on the isle display with about the DVD and Blu-ray stock more evenly depleted with about four time the slots for DVD than Blu-ray at a glance.

Twilight: Breaking Dawn' DVD sales top 'Eclipse,' trail 'New Moon'

February 13, 2012 | 1:09 pm

The latest "Twilight" movie sold more DVDs on its opening weekend than the prior installment, but Bella, Edward and Jacob are still well behind their record.

"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 1," the fourth picture in the hit teen vampire series, sold an estimated 3.2 million DVD and Blu-ray copies from its Saturday morning debut through Sunday night, according to Lionsgate's recently acquired Summit Entertainment unit, which released the film theatrically in November.

That's about 18% more than the home entertainment bow of the last "Twilight" picture, "Eclipse."

However, it's 20% behind the debut sales of "New Moon," the second "Twilight" movie, which sold 4 million copies it first weekend. The original "Twilight" sold 3.8 million copies on its first weekend.

"Eclipse" was the only "Twilight" movie to launch on DVD in December, as it was also the only one to hit theaters in the summer. The first two debuted on DVD in March of 2009 and 2010, respectively, closer to the February date for the latest installment.

Summit charged a higher wholesale price for "Breaking Dawn -- Part 1" than previous "Twilight" movies, meaning revenue per copy sold was higher than in the past.

"Breaking Dawn" also sold 50,000 digital copies and was rented 80,000 times via video-on-demand. Those figures are up 47% and 142%, respectively, over "Eclipse," according to Summit.

The final "Twilight" movie, "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 2," is due in theaters Nov. 16.

25% Blu-ray unit marketshare for Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part I

Lady and the Tramp #1 on Blu-ray list

'Twilight' Dawns On Top; 'Tramp' Tops Blu-ray Chart

The Twilgiht Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1

Summit Entertainment is going out with a bang. The company, which last month announced it is being acquired by Lionsgate for $412.5 million in cash and stock, scored the top-selling home entertainment release of the week — and, so far, the year — with The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1.

Released on a Saturday instead of the traditional Tuesday, the latest installment in the hugely successful vampire-movie franchise was in stores for only two days during the week-long tracking period. Even so, Summit said it sold 3.2 million discs, 50,000 downloads and 80,000 VOD transactions on those two days.

Not surprisingly, Breaking Dawn easily bowed at No. 1 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert overall disc sales chart the week ended Feb. 12.

Breaking Dawn was followed in the No. 2 spot by fellow newcomer Lady and the Tramp, from Walt Disney Studios, making its Blu-ray Disc debut. The No. 3 spot went to a third new release, A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas, the third installment in Warner’s edgy, stoner-buddy comedy franchise, which grossed $35 million in theaters.

On Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart, Lady and the Tramp narrowly edged out Breaking Dawn as the week’s top seller. A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas bowed at No. 3.

Just 25% of Breaking Dawn’s overall sales came from the Blu-ray Disc edition, compared to 38% for Harold and Kumar.

On Home Media Magazine’s weekly video rental chart, Breaking Dawn debuted at No. 3, behind holdovers Drive, from Sony (repeating at No. 1) and Disney’s Real Steel (repeating at No. 2).

25% unit marketshare of 3.2 M units in two days calculates out to 800,000 Blu-ray units of Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 1 for Saturday and Sunday. Only the Saturday sales will count in the HMM Sun-Sat revenue week but Lady and the Tramp actually beat the Twilight movie in Blu-ray units sold according to NV first alert.

At say $20 average price per unit for 800,000 units of Twilight Breaking Dawn Part I and 800,000+ units of Lady and the Tramp, that's $32 M + for just those two leading titles alone spread on the release week and Sunday of the following week.

Blu-ray Sales: In the Driver's Seat

New releases dominated the Blu-ray sales chart with as many as four in the top five. (Transformers: Dark of the Moon is a bit of an odd case, but more on that in a second.)

Drive led the way with 420,000 units / $8.39 million giving it an opening week Blu-ray share of 57%. This is a great opening compared to the film's theatrical run.

In Time also did better on Blu-ray than it did on DVD earning second place with 306,000 units / $6.12 million for an opening week Blu-ray share of 54%. This is the type of film that should thrive on Blu-ray, so it is no real surprise it cracked 50%.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon returned to the chart in third place with 190,000 units / $3.82 million for the week giving it a total of 3.19 million units / $68.03 million. It was able to get back into the top five thanks to the release of the 3D Box Set, but we don't have a breakdown between the new release and the previous Blu-ray release.

Real Steel fell from first to fourth with 187,000 units / $5.24 million for the week giving it totals of 989,000 units / $27.69 million after two.

The Thing rounded out the top five with 168,000 units / $4.03 million, which was 55% of total units sold. Its theatrical run and its home market debut is weak, but that Blu-ray share is strong.

Treasure Buddies just missed the top five with 105,000 units / $2.66 million. Its opening Blu-ray share was 22%, which is low for the format as a whole, but strong for a live action kids' movie.

Dream House managed ninth place, which is what it earn on the DVD sales chart as well. It sold 55,000 unit while generating $1.25 million in opening week sales giving it a Blu-ray share of just 38%. I was expecting more.

To Kill a Mockingbird made its Blu-ray debut in tenth place with 43,000 units / $782,000. This is excellent for a catalog title and the studio should be very happy.

Star Trek: The Next Generation also made its Blu-ray debut this week with The Next Level, which was right behind at 43,000 units / $648,000. This is excellent for a TV on DVD release, especially one that is this old and is merely a taste of future releases.

The Big Year was further back in 14th place with 38,000 units / $894,000. Its hard to spin this number in a positive fashion, but its Blu-ray share of 31% is better than average for the genre.

Finally, we get to The Double in 19th place with 26,000 units / $394,000. It also earned a Blu-ray share of 31%, but action films should perform better than that.

The overall Blu-ray was strong compared to last week and last year. It grew 16% in terms of units and 3% in terms of revenue from last week, which is actually a little weaker than DVD sales grew from last week.

However, its growth was more explosive when compared to last year up 79% in terms of units and 78% in terms of dollars.

As usual, DVD sales were lower than last year, albeit by a more modest margin than we've seen in the recent past. The overall Blu-ray share was mostly steady compared to last week sitting at 44% in terms of units and 49% in terms of revenue. If it can maintain that level while we wait for the winter blockbusters to come out, I will be very happy.

Next week we have good news / bad news. The good news is The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1 comes out. The bad news is, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1 comes out. While the film should sell a lot of DVDs, I don't think its Blu-ray share will be great. Plus, it doesn't come out till Saturday, so only the first two days will count towards this week.

On a more positive note, last year's new releases were terrible, both on DVD and on Blu-ray. In fact, the number one selling Blu-ray was Paranormal Activity 2 at just over 100,000 units. Breaking Dawn, Part 1 should top that. Hell, A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas could top that.

DVD Sales: Searching for Treasure on the Home Market

While there were a lot of new releases on this week's DVD sales chart, it was clearly a case of quantity over quality as even the best selling release was merely mediocre.

Treasure Buddies was top dog with sales of 381,000 units / $6.47 million during its opening week. This is roughly in line with the previous installment, but below average for the franchise.

Drive was relatively close behind with 313,000 units / $4.87 million. Hopefully it performed better on Blu-ray, as this was not a great start on DVD.

Real Steel fell to third place with 265,000 units / $5.30 million for the week giving it totals of 962,000 units / $17.43 million after two. It wasn't that long ago that even a second-tier release would sell more than 1 million units in the opening week, but the market has really atrophied in recent years.

In Time opened in fourth place with 263,000 units / $3.94 million, which is weak, even compared to its theatrical run. The Thing barely managed a spot in the top five during its opening week with 136,000 units / $2.37 million. It was a non-factor for it theatrical run and now it's struggling on the home market.

There were three more new releases to chart, but they were barely worth mentioning. Dream House placed ninth, but with just 90,000 units / $1.62 million while The Big Year was right behind with 82,000 units / $1.23 million. The final new release to chart was The Double, which only managed 12th place with 58,000 units / $609,000 units. This is not terrible, for a limited release that barely avoided the Mendoza Line during its opening weekend; however, the studio was obviously hoping for a lot more when it gave the film the greenlight.
