i don't think it was really meant for use from a constant stable source such as a movie. it was really made for tv for the reasons you mentioned. i wouldn't recommend it for watching commercial free movies from premium channels like HBO, SHO, or on blu or dvd. turn it on for normal tv watching and turn it off for commercial free movie watching.

that's just my opinion. i like and use Audyssey and am happy with what it does for my audio experience.

I run Audyssey and have the same setting- EQ on for TV, OFF for BD , though I had to 'turn up' the center channel 1 or 2 db, but that might be just my speaker.

i decided to check and found that there is a new update for the 509. don't know how new it is but i think the last one i did was a couple of months ago. here's what onkyo says is in the update:

"We are pleased to offer this firmware update for the best possible performance of your AV Receiver.
A firmware update is now available through the Network or USB connections on the TX-NR509.
To check if your firmware is the latest version, go in to Setup -> Hardware Setup -> Firmware Update and
check the 16 digit number. (1071-1000-0000-0103)
If any of the numbers differ from the latest version available, please update your unit.
The 12/16/2011 update addresses the following:
1. Supports Onkyo Remote App for Android version: 1.00 or later
*it is also necessary to update the App.
2. Adds support of Spotify control via Remote App for Android
3. Improves noise during playback of DTS-HD Master Audio with particular Blu-ray disc
4. Corrects operation of speaker distance calculation in Audyssey 2EQ"

check the version number in the setup under firmware update, if it matches the number listed above in bold/blue then your fine, if it is less then you should consider the update.

the update went without incident (as always) and everythings working. always remember once the receiver screen says "completed" you must push the power button on the physical receiver once, it will then restart and your good to go!

still love this receiver it helps me get my HT & music on should i choose to in the bedroom!

I just got my 509 yesterday and set it up love it already! I did the Audessy calibration, but i did have to adjust a few speakers dB to get a better range of volume. I turned off the Audessy EQ, because it was just echoing the front stage into the surrounds in an unnatural way and now by setup sounds amazing with more nuances than my hdmi/uncommpressed sony receiver!

what do you mean by this? were you listening to discrete 5 channel audio or was it stereo and you were matrixing it? how much distance is between your fronts and your surrounds?

i guess just understanding what you meant by the bolded statement would help me quite a bit. mine sounds incredible with Audessy Dynamic EQ on and i've never heard any echoing of any kind. i play 2 channel as 2 channel and 5 channel as 5 channel (or as the source is).

glad you like the 509, it's a great little receiver. it is very good for my SACD's (thank you oppo 93!) & for internet/network audio streaming too!

I Was listening to discrete uncompressed 5.1 audio, i only noticed the echoing when i listened to a concert blu-ray or when a singing scene came on in the movie i was watching (Big Fish) other times it was more subtle. My front speakers are about 8 feet in front of me, rears about 6.

I always run my center 2 to 3dB hotter than the mains, depending on how far I sit from the center position -- in the current system, I'm running it +3dB hotter...

Yep that's exactly what i do word for word! discovered i like EQ on for tv, but not Blu-ray and turn the center up! ha

I have the Onkyo TX - NR609 and i have my PS3 set to bitstream...... i can not seem to get Tru hd working...When i play a Blu-ray i only get "dolby digital" displayed... Even when you push start on the PS3 controller to see all the data it says "dolby digital".... I changed the PS3 to PCM and pushed the start button on the PS3 controller to see the data it said Tru-hd and the receiver said T/D....I just go this receiver today so i new to it....Thanks for any help

Some discs play the Dolby Digital track by default, you have to select the True HD track in the set up menu on the disc or change the audio to True HD once the movie starts to play. Thats all I can think it would be, have you tried more than 1 disc with a True HD track? Does the receiver display DTS HD MASTER when you bitstream from the PS3 a disc that has a DTS HD track?
