Most of the Studio Ghibli on Streaming Netflix were the Disney dubs licensed through Starz, and Starz on Netflix is about to go bye-bye on Feb. 29. But that's okay, they only had Ponyo, Howl's and Tales From Earthsea, and Ponyo had already expired.
Now, if you're talking hard-disk Netflix, you've got eight BETTER titles than Howl's to choose from--Kiki's Delivery Service and Spirited Away the best that spring to mind--including four non-Miyazaki Ghiblis that aren't really that bad, either.)

Castle of Cagliostro is my favorite Miyazaki not taking my kids into consideration. Besides, between that and Mystery of Mamo they made a killer laser disc game back in the 80's that I still love to play through an emulator.

Cool, thanks for the suggestions. I'll have to watch it this weekend with my kids. Just streaming for me, mostly for the kids.

Now that it's been a few days since I've seen it I have to say it's the best anime film I've ever seen in theatres, granted the only other one I've seen in theatres is The Spirits Within. Really hope it'll be the first Ghibli film to get a collectible case release but I doubt it. Still say 5/5 for the movie, which is quite surprising considering I wasn't exactly looking forward to it before I saw it.

Yeah, my fondness for the movie has increased as days pass and I think about it more and more. I was really focused while watching it, and have been thinking about certain parts a lot lately and the cleverness of the movie as a whole (there was so much detail spent on the objects in Arrietty's house!). I gave the film a 4/5 rating upon my first viewing, but once I see it again at home and get more familiar with it, I have a feeling it's going to become one of my favorites.

It's going to be an impatient wait for the Blu-ray!

Not sure about whether it's going to be in theaters or go straight to home video like Tales from Earthsea, but I think Disney is prepping to dub Kokuriko-zaka Kara (From Up on Poppy Hill) in English.

I'd read an interview about a month ago in which Kathleen Kennedy (producer of the English dub versions of Ponyo and Arrietty) mentioned that they were "going onto the third collaboration with them," when asked about her work with Studio Ghibli.

Sounds great hopefully it will be better than the mediocre Ponyo, although my affection for Arrietty may end up affecting how I feel about that movie.

One of the things that saved Ghibli's bacon in the US was that part of the deal included Disney making a financial/production collaboration interest in future Ghibli productions, giving Disney rights on future movies past the existing deal--
Which included Spirited Away, which ended up making a lot more money in theaters than Princess Mononoke, when Disney took a chance on recouping their investment.

And as long as Disney thinks the next production will be the next Ponyo and next Arietty, we're safe.
(Tales From Earthsea was already getting disastrous reviews stateside, so what few flyover screenings it got over here was just to qualify it for Best Animated competition.)

Wife and I saw this last night and we both loved it! While not my favorite Ghibli (Totoro takes it, with Spirited Away close behind), it was still an entertaining movie. I really liked the simple story and how it was more about the adventure than conflict. My favorite part of the movie, however, was the detail in the background and how creative they got with designing the objects in Arrietty's house.

That's a good point, and makes me wonder what they'll do with From Up on Poppy Hill. Following the success of Arrietty they might go for a theatrical run, but I'm not sure the plot will be as marketable as some of the last few releases. It might be more of a niche title.

If anything goes straight to home video in North America from this point forward, I hope that the film would get a Blu-ray release instead of just straight-to-DVD. I know that Tales From Earthsea wasn't on Blu-ray in Japan when the film was released here, so that probably explains why it was DVD only.

The film still seems to be going strong at the box office. According to Box Office Mojo, it made an estimated $1,058,000 yesterday, whereas Ponyo had already dropped to $706,651 one week after release.

I know Arrietty is in more theaters than Ponyo ever was, but I think the film is going to have another solid weekend at the box office. With all the rave reviews, I'm hoping word of mouth advertising will keep people in theaters for a while. I was watching interviews last night on YouTube where John Lasseter was discussing, around the time of the Spirited Away release, that it was his hope that success in the theater would lead to the audience seeking out other films by the studio, leading the way to success with home video releases.

I hope this little spark of interest that Arrietty is generating makes Disney rethink their Blu-ray strategy instead of just relying on the DVD's that are already on the shelves.

I just want Arrietty on BD as soon as possible, hopefully June, after a "nice" $30 million + run. Hoping Nausicaa gets here soon, really looking forward to it now.

I hope you enjoy your Nausicaa Blu-ray! I got it on release day and it has fast become a favorite film in my collection. I'd seen it on DVD previously and was kind of on the fence about getting it on Blu-ray, but I am glad that I did. After watching it a few times I'd say it is in my top 5 favorite animated films.

In Arrietty news, the film has now grossed an estimated $14,660,000 in North America, putting it only about a half million away from passing Ponyo ($15,090,399) as the highest grossing Ghibli release by Disney. I hope it sticks around for a little while and makes as much as possible. It'd be nice to pass Ponyo by a large margin and show Disney that there is a viable market for these films in North America, both as theatrical releases and on home video (specifically Blu-ray lol).

I just wish Disney would release the movie here in Japanese, at least for a select few theaters. It's not like digital releases can't have multiple audio tracks. There's an arthouse theater (several, actually) in Minneapolis that shows a lot of foreign movies in their original language but all of the Ghibli films have been in English. I can't stand dubbing so I've never seen one of their movies in the theater here, although I'd like to.

The downside of watching a PG movie in the theaters. Glad you liked it though.
