More on topic, for most of us there really is nothing like having a hard-copy of something at your fingertips, whether it's a blu-ray or a book. But trying to explain that to someone is kind of like having to explain the downside of trophy-hunting...if you have to, there's no real point in doing so. |

I have been considering leaving Netflix, but right now it is not the time for me. It looks like the 'a la cart' option that people want for cable is happenind, but with streaming. Netflix, Hulu+, HBO, soon to be Starz. I can budget for Netflix and maybe one other, but not all. I figure the cost of Netflix streaming is equal to seeing 1 movie in theaters a month.
One thing I found relevant is this: http://theoatmeal.com/comics/game_of_thrones ... I will most likely be buying the set from Best Buy since I want to support the show (slightly annoying trying to watch a tv series with 1 disc out at a time). I still keep cable because of sports. For Fios 25/25 internet it would be $75, for a triple play it is $90 (plus cable boxes). I figure the extra cost is worth it for ESPN, YES Network (mlb.tv is $125 and most games would be blacked out), and MSG HD. I have a queue of 186 movies, and 96 streaming. That is more than enough that I am considering cancelling the disc based and just buying the blurays I think are worth it. The streaming is mostly tv shows, but there are still some good movies. The only thing that annoys me is that I see certain titles with HD+5.1, that would not really take advantage of it...and then have titles like Tron: Legacy and Kick Ass, where the sound is a big part of the movie, and they are in neither. I tried VUDU with the HD option and thought the quality was good, but at $6 I would rather buy the physical copy to keep, and is the same reason I don't really use On Demand. I would sign up for Amazon Prime for viewing if they brought the app to the ps3 (I understand Microsoft has some sort of exclusivity agreement). I just don't watch on my computer as much and don't want to buy a Roku just for that (although, if I did not have a ps3 the Roku is a great deal). For me Hulu and Hulu+ (tried the 30 day free trial) are not worth it since the Free On Demand selection from Fios has most of the shows I watch or am interested in (only one they did not have was Person of Interest). Also, getting stuff the scally-wag way isn't usually an option either for a lot of the stuff TCM offers, as I found out last night after my IPTV company decided to upgrade the firmware on my box, and my HTPC's PVRing capabilities recorded several hours of how to use the new firmware. I couldn't find several of the films through the torrents to watch, so that tells me that finding them legitimately via streaming is even less likely.I don't mind paying for cable, and paying for a 60 dollar Hauppague was the best 60 I've spent, as I've earned my cash back several times now, despite the Aliant goof-up yesterday. Netflix is pretty much useless in Canada, as they have less content, content I'm not interested in, or content I already own. Apparently I can pay 5 bucks a month for an unblocker, as well as pay the US Netflix fee, (also gives me Hulu and BBC) but to me, that seems like more hassle than it's worth. I buy a lot of films on DVD and BD, get some stuff the scally-wag way (and usually go out and buy it afterwards), or I record it from my IPTV box. With my computer, I usually delete it after I've watched it, or I move it to an external drive to watch later/or if I go to my parents for the weekend, to watch there. |

The biggest problem I had with Netflix and all streaming services is they didn't have any of the movies I wanted. As for tv shows, they kept taking them away and then bringing them back and they only had a handful of shows I watched anyways. As much as I hate having to go back to cable, I am glad we did now, with 2 DVR's I can pretty much record endlessly all day long. I also have a TV Tuner on my PC so count that as a third dvr effectively. Anyways I think streaming would have been much better if there either was just one service or if it was handled like cable, you have different services for different content. Netflix was a joke though I hated them the entire time. We watched more on Hulu + but even then it was still limited. Streaming as a whole is just not here yet. Thankfully Blu Ray is...
