I only use my NS-BRDVD4 in the living room to play Blurays, I do not have mine hooked up to my network for Netflix or anything. That way I can avoid upgrading it or someone else accidentally upgrading it. Also with the last firmware released that allowed the regions to be changed, I've never had any issues playing any movies or extras on the actual Blu-ray disc. (Except Ponyo which you could get past by choosing a chapter instead of play movie from the main menu.) Bd Live content I don't use. If you really want a player you can use the latest firmware, you should get a second bluray player and use your Insignia for only region locked discs. Last edited by KFelon; 03-18-2012 at 02:12 AM. |

I picked up my 2nd refurb NS-BRDVD4 about 10 days ago but haven't had too much time with it yet. I did watch a couple of DVDs (not available on Blu), which played fine.
As I had mentioned before, this one had the region-free ability out of the box (manufactured August 2010) so I had not changed the firmware. However, I tried to play "Martha Marcy May Marlene" (20th Century Fox) on Blu last night and the disc would not play. It would give me the menu but not respond to play. It did play in my other NS-BRDVD4. So I did the same firmware change and was able to play it -- I guess the original firmware was way too old to be compatible with this new disc. The machine response somehow felt a little jerkier and noisier than my 1st machine, so I will continue to test it out before considering it a keeper. |

Just got my player in today works fine thanks for the thread SquirreL.
1 question tho do I have to enter the code every time I restart the player or will the Config option always be there? Sorry if it's already been asked.

Hooked up the NS-BRDVD4 today. Installed firmware, works like a champ with Region B discs. My remote even works. The unit looked brand new. I might buy a second as a backup so I don't have to overspend on an Oppo or Pioneer. Thanks SquirelL, you are the man!

Since this is my first time ordering with Best Buy online, I hope this isn't common. Anyways, there is a delay with my order. Even though I ordered the item last week with a estimate pick up date of today, they just shipped the item out today and alerted me of the delay and look for the next email within the next couple of day.

You have to re-enter it when you turn it back on each time.

There probably is and if not soon will be a way as it is a new player from this year. Althought It is not a firmware update provided by Panasonic. There are ppl who claim to be panasonic enthusists that are trying to better panasonic items in the after market. You have fill out some sort of application and then "donate" (pay 'em) for the software to download. They do not guarentee it to work. I'm sure it probably does but I was not willing to take the risk of turning my BD player into a paper weight.
Also if the player is not equiped with a PAL coverter chip inside it will not always play region B/2 stuff. Not to mention the 1080/60 standard region A coding as some region B discs are encoded with 1080/50. Not sure but I think that is what the chip converts aswell as dvd format Pal-Europe and NTSC-US |

Thank you very much for your reply.
The NTSC x PAL would not be an issue for me, I believe. I remember from the olden days a site that had for several DVD player brands ways to make them region free by means of a combination of clicks on their remote controls. Isn't there anything similar fr BluRay players? Side comment...in this day an age of download contents I don't see the point of making discs as well as players region-specific. Thanks again. |
