Default Don BD Review

Don BD Review
Here is my review of the Don BD. A very well made movie by Farhan but I think casting SRK for the lead role was the biggest mistake (now please don't get armed up with this one . It is my opinion) Otherwise, the movie is trendy and stylish and carries typical Farhan Akhtar touches.

BDReview:

+ Points
1. Well balanced picture quality. Not outstanding but better than good.
2. Smooth and clean presentation. Detail is nice in most scenes. Color looked ok in most scenes (considering Farhan wanted a specific look for the film.
3. Good Sharpness - although noticed slight EE being applied (see in - points)
4. I really enjoyed the audio. Background scores and songs really came alive. I am getting my new amp and surround speaker set delivered tomorrow. Will test the sound again.

- Points
1. Edge Enhancement is applied and although it is not noticebale in most scenes, the effect was visible in some scenes. You could see the effect in the Petronas Tower shots and in some cases with peoples hair strands and also with scenes that are prone to moire and jaggies.
2. Contrast could have been slightly better.(just slightly)
3. Although the film is presented in a specific color cast, some scenes looked bid reddish - magenta push)
4. If you look closely, on the extreme left side of the image you could see occassional image artifacts like yellowish cast, fibre like strands (mainly film exposure atrifacts that are normally removed during postprocessing.) I remember Silsila or Kabhi Kabhie BD had those in plenty at the bottom). In Don, there are many such occasions like - when kareena's brother is killed, during the jungle scens in India and many more). If you use the crop funtion on your display you could get rid of those but you wwould also loose some pixels on all other sides. I would expect postprocessing to take care of this and not sure how this slipped through. This is my biggest negative point with the BD as it is very distracting at times and you can't but start noticiing it.
5. One small issue on the black level - if you notice the sequence where Jasjit goes out to steal the diamonds, the black background is quite noisy and the black level is raised. It is not the issue with the BD but the way the source is processed. All other dark scenes in the movie are fine.

Conclusion

I was quite impressed with the BD. Nice, detailed and clean picture quality and very good sound quality. Some scenes really shine and can create a very filmic effect on a large screen. The image integrity in most scenes were excellent apart from few niggles I mentioned in the negative points. The image although really nice could have been slightly better considering the age of the film.

Overall, I was very pleased with the BD and it is definitely recommended. I only wish Farhan used someone else for the lead role.

Good work by T-Series.

And it was great to see no disturbing logos

My Score
Video: 3.8 (I'd have given 4 if issue 4 was not so prominent)
Audio: 4.0
Overall Quality Score: 4.00

I completely agree with you, I felt they should have cast a younger actor, like Hrithik or someone else! It was an excellent movie! and the bd was good aswell!

I think this is one of SRK's better movies. He can be a ham for sure, but I think he played it straight enough for this one. Also, this is the last film in which he does some real aerobic dancing, his injuries have started slowing him down and songs like Kaike Paan and Maurya Re are wonderful numbers.

Default Don - Rapid Eye Movies blu-ray

REM are releasing Don on blu-ray in November. Might seem quite pointless to some since the T-Series one has already released. And from what I read in the thread people were quite happy with the transfer? Also, REM's last release, K3G wasn't all that great.

There are extras though...

In terms of K3G, the REM BD will be the best for a long time to come. YRF has a proven track record for movies older than 7 years with the exception of KK, it is abysmal.

I've decided to order this movie now. I hope i like it more on blu-ray than when i saw it when it first came out. I never saw the original Don before i saw the remake, but now i have that one too. I like the remake's ideas compared to the original, so hopefully i'll enjoy it more now lol.

I am not sure how that reply answer's the actual question. Anyhow, the 'Don (T-Series)' blu-ray was not authored by Mr. Chandna's company, ie. Digital Entertainment.

Default Don

Sorry to dig-up this old thread.

Need some help. I about to purchase Don. I live in the US and would need English subtitles. I know there are several distributers for the same movie in India and the overseas market.

In terms of picture quality should I purchase?
