I don't work for any electronic or surge protector company and I don't sell anything of the sort.

What is completely ignorant and just stupid is to spend lots of money and build yourself a very good to high end home theater only to protect it with a proven inadequate surge protector that is not only cheaply made but doesn't handle enough watts and voltage to protect your gear but especially if the design of the surge protector is flawed from the beginning.

Surge Protectors that use mov's do not protect against surges, what they do is divert the surge from the neutral to the ground wire which leads to ground contamination and common mode surges. Even if the power light is still on your surge protector doesn't mean the internal parts are still working. A mov can not handle any where near a 6,000 volt surge either.

If these APC/Monster/Panamax/Triplite protectors are legit then why don't these manufacturers tell you which factories in China they are made in for quality control reasons? Most are made in the same Chinese factory. But companies like SurgeX are made in the U.S. in North Carolina and uses the superior Advanced Series Mode (ASM) technology. It's used by NASA, pro-sports stadiums, concert halls, professional recording studios.

I personally use the SurgeX XF2 FlatPak for my Pioneer Elite Kuro PRO-151FD.

http://www.surgex.com/pdf/XF2-LR.pdf

If you don't want to spend on a SurgeX then look into Brickwall or Zerosurge which SurgeX leased the Series Mode technology to. They are more affordable.

This post is great but it would be quite handy to have a few recommendations, for different budgets, for ignorant people like myself

Default Recommendations please!

This forum is great, but I do not know enough and cannot afford to spend a ton of money. However, I realize that I need much better protection for my electronics. If someone could please give a few recommendations of some products that are in the $50-75 range, I'd greatly appreciate it. I know it's worth it to spend more money than that, but in the time being, I'd like to get better protection until I can save up to spend more money.

I have a 55" panasonic plasma tv, ps3, blu-ray player, home theater receiver/5.1 sound system, dvd player, directv dvr and a few other small electronics. Is there a basic surge protector I should get just for the tv and the sound system in this price range? I actually have 2 big plasmas so I'd probably end up buying 2 surge protectors for at least the tv's and the sound system, because if I lose the dvd player/ps3, that's not a huge deal price-wise. Obviously, I'd like to have all-around protection, but I just don't have the money saved right now.

So if someone could please help me out and give me a recommendation, I'd really appreciate it. I don't want to be an ignorant tv owner who gets screwed down the line, but I need a temporary solution until I can save up for something like a surgex system.

Thanks so much.

Also, in general, if I wanted to get 1 surge protector for my 55" panasonic plasma tv, directv dvr, sound system/receiver, ps3, dvd player, what specific requirements would I need to look for in terms of joules and other features? I just don't know much about surge protectors, so some basic requirements to look for would also be really helpful. Thanks so much.

If you're saving up for something better, I don't think it matters much which brand of surge protector you go with (as a placeholder). oppopioneer provided a partial list of companies that do not adopt MOVs (metal oxide varistors) in their products, and just about all license their technology from SurgeX, but as you discovered, they're a bit pricey. If you're looking for a temporary off-the-shelf solution, I think just about anything from APC, Panamax or Tripp-Lite will work for now.

so I want something that does not have MOVs, right?

And in terms of voltage and joules, any number range I should look for?

thanks so much for your response. really appreciate it.

Here is my power protection. The bottom appliance.

Belkin Pure AV.

Best thing I ever got. You can also shut power off at a switch of a button. So I shut of my Power Amp and blu-ray players when I'm not using. I just leave on the AVR, Remote charger and iTouch.

For TRUE, worry-free protection, yes.

A cheaper MOV "protector" is better than nothing, but they are not a good long-term solution. I won't re-hash the reasons why, as you can read through this thread for that. Keep in mind, though, that statements like "I've used [insert MOV device here] for years and have never had a problem" only mean the person's equipment has never experienced a transient sufficient enough to damage anything. It's no different than someone claiming they speed all of the time and have never received a ticket, therefore speeding will not get you in trouble.

I'd like to get the experts opinion on Furman equipment. By the price I would think they are worthwhile but do not know which tech they use. Reason I'm asking is a buddy of mine who used to be manager for a pro audio shop told me that's the only brand they used and highly recommended them. I'm using Belkin right now as it's better to have this than nothing (have dirty power here, old construction and building code in Montreal in those days was almost non existent).

for a dirty power issue, you want something that offeres good power conditioning with AVR. that may or may not be one stop solution. you may need two seperate devices to give you the best of both worlds.

best of luck to you.

My PF60 did help a lot since it has different banks for video and audio and amps, etc. Also fixed a ground loop problem I had before. But reading on the actual surge protection got me to thinking if it was enough. Luckily I've never experienced any problems since.

Marvelous post. Extremely happy that we people are thinking serious about power protection. Atleast some energy would be saved by this.

Default ups surge protector

Finally getting around to buy one.
Most cabinet UPS surge protectors for HT, are at the $280 - $500 and up.
Looking at something more budget freindly, (the CPU tower type) with lcd display, could this work well with HT gear?

http://www.amazon.com/CyberPower-CP1.../dp/B000FBK3QK
http://www.amazon.com/APC-BR1500G-BA.../dp/B003Y24DEU
Not sure what loyalties with brands? I figured APC, Cyber Power is most common.

5 units will be powered: HDTV, A/V rec., CPU, BDR, XboX.
thanks for any advice. Just want to be sure about all of this.

either will support the equipment load you have. either is better than nothing and will offer you better protection than nothing. your gear will get the advantage of good, clean power with no low voltage or brownout conditions. just remember, if your experiencing a power outtage that last longer than a minute, best to turn off your gear and wait.

best of luck to you. i currently have an APC UPS with some of my gear connected to it; good stuff!

keep us posted.
