Thought I would post an update to this thread since it's been a while - yes I am still borrowing and looking out for suspect local titles that may be cropped... haven't found one for a little while which is a good thing. But for every good one I check, there are bound to be more bad ones.
Have some good news though - picked up The Hunter today which I was really looking forward to watching, and can report that it is OAR 2.35:1 with great PQ, and LPCM 5.1 soundtrack. Very impressed and would recommend the movie!! |

^ Nice! I've had my eyes on this one since it was announced seeing that I'm a big Willem Dafoe and Sam Neill fan.

Yeh it's a great movie - the ending in particular is very emotional if you haven't already seen it, it's quite a sad movie. But very well acted.
And the PQ/AQ is top notch - I love seeing aussie films in amazing quality like we see here - the Tassie scenery in particualar just looks amazing in scope ratio, if only we could get some more Aussie films in OAR like Ten Canoes and Strange Bedfellows.... |

Update: New Addition:
The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations (Icon) - open matte & reframing - US version is OAR - more picture info on top/bottom, less on sides I actually had this one in my collection for a while but never got a chance to view it. By the way these ones with less on the sides are almost as bad as ones that are put into the 'Cropped' section (those have no extra top info that's the difference), this typically happens when the film is either shot on Super35 or digital, and they mess around with the framing for the Blu-ray release. Avatar on the other hand should be on the list. It was 2.35:1 in 2D theatres but Cameron changed it for the Blu-ray. So none of the Blu-ray releases actually mirror the director's original framing intentions for 2D because he changed his mind after the fact. --| Sale/Trade thread - Steels & regular Blus! ...big update April 23! |--

Just rented KILLING THEM SOFTLY -
Heavily cropped to 1.78:1 from 2.35:1 and looks grainy as hell. Not sharp and smooth like the theatrical version. Nice job Sony/Universal! |

^Assuming of course that the rental copy doesn't differ from the retail version. Usually with Sony it doesn't, but being that they're in with Universal now maybe they are doing separate rental BDs. Lionsgate does this and they sometimes feature different aspect ratios or lossy audio so it's a possibility.

It's strange too if they have, because Sony are usually one of the better studios when it comes to quality of releases.
