speaker settings for music listening?

Trying to get an idea of how to set up my system for music listening the best. How do you guys set your speakers up for music? Front=Large with Sub, Front=Small with sub, or Front Large with no sub. Thanks in advance

It's going to vary depending on setup. Personally I like mine the best with all speakers set to small, 80 Hz crossover and all 3 subs active. My subs handle low frequencies better than my LCR or my surrounds and allows them to better handle the mid-bass.

What I have done is I have a Naim Nait 5i Integrated Amp connect via its HT by-pass to my Integra AVR. I use my blu-ray players optical out to my Arcam rDAC and then into my Naim for all my 2-ch music, the speakers are naturally set to LARGE without the sub playing. All other speakers are run off of my Integra, when Im in the pass-thru mode on the Naim and watching a movie or TV, my speakers are all crossed over at different frequencies, the fronts 40hz, the center 55hz, the surrounds are all at 80 hz.

When I was just using the Integra I was set to large on the L/R and crossed over the same as above. So movies would use the sub, music would not.

I am using the Yamaha rx-663 reciever with a sony blu-ray player.

Personally, I would run the speakers large for music since you have decent speakers with extension enough to play the lowest notes of a bass guitar.

Would you still run the sub or do you think that the fronts are enough?

personally I think the fronts should be enough for most types of music, however Im not sure what you are listening to, so if you listen to a lot of hip-hop and want that club slamming bass beat, you might want the sub on. however if you listen mostly to rock, jazz, or country, you won't really need the sub, IMO.

FYI, I am more of a 2-ch traditionalist, so I dont like using the sub for music.

I have to disagree with Callas. Bass management is a good idea for both home theater and two channel music. The main issue is not the extension of the front speakers, but rather the most important issue is where the low frequency waves in the room are generated. You have some flexibility in moving the subwoofer(s) around so that you get optimum bass in the room. However, it is not always possible to move the front speakers around. You can't possibly place the front speakers in the corners of the room behind you.

In most cases, two or four subwoofers are much better than one subwoofer.

My set up is like yours as well, sounds great for music and movies.

I have all speakers on Large and the xover is set at 55Hz ..... Since I have full range front rear and center speakers.....

if all your speakers are large...a crossover won't do anything...
