I am wondering this and dont hate me for wondering but with the prices of Blu rays kind of high I just dont want to go out and spend thousand + on them and some new format all of a sudden pops up.
Has there been any talk or do you think there will be some new format coming out anytime soon or is blu ray going to be around for many more years? Sorry if this has been asked before but I am more of a gamer then a move buff & I just started really getting into watching movies (Blu Ray) so I was just not sure. i am new to blu ray as well. i just went out and upgraded more then half of my Collection from DVD to blu ray. i am happy i did it now, as all the movies i got were really cheap and on sale at best buy.
when blu ray first came out i was thinking the same thing and did not want to spend the XXX on a player and all that money on movies but it seems they drop in price so much, every one can afford them now. i got all the terminator Movies for 7.50 a movie and got all the Alien and Predator movies for super cheap to (29.99 for the box set for Aliens) If i was you i would make the jump and upgrade it seems blu ray is here to stay, and the prices of player are dropping Fast i am gonna buy my Mom a Blu ray player this christmas so she can enjoy it to (she rents Dvds every week and to rent a blu ray is the same price now at our local video store and most of the time its cheaper because they have deals to rent 2 for a 1$) |

i doubt it will go anywhere blu rays are just getting cheaper and cheaper and once they hit so low people with DVD's will just start buying blu ray after that. i bet the next thing after blu ray with be something like digital downloads or a flash card base or something

Think of it this way, you have 3 choices. Invest in no collection at all, keep investing in already obsolete DVD, or get Blu-ray. Nothing is future-proof, but if you opt for no collection at all, you're missing out.
Look too far ahead and you're missing out from what's right in front of you. Maybe it's just me, but I don't think manufacturers will be too antsy to get the new technology out without more people being on board the previous format. And I still see a whole lot of people in stores buying JUST DVD's. |

I think blu-ray will be here for the long haul.... There is talk of 4k resolution being the next big thing, but it would still be on blu-ray discs, just larger capacity ones......
I say collect to your hearts content!

agree with this. As to the original question, this is my take. I don't know what soon or many more years means. But BD came out in 2006, it is now 2012 and you are just starting to buy into it. A few companies in 2002 (the BDF) decided to get together and work on a common standard using new tech they were working on which they named Blu-ray. At this point in time I don't know of anything that could replace BD. Usualy you don't have a company that comes out and the next day it all changes. It takes time, it is not just for the science/tech but, even more so, the politics since in the end you need the support of the different studios, the different electronics companies.... and they all have different agendas and likes. At this point I don't see anything that can replace BD. Will there ever be something, I take that for granted, but I am guessing (at least with my definition of soon and years away) that it is definitely years away. Since it takes years to go from new tech in journals to a new format and don't forget that when a new format comes out is not as important as when you jump into it. (i.e. if someone waits for the new tech to be 6 years old even if that new tech launches tomorrow it will still be 6 years away.) |

VHS was here for a long time,DVD was here for a long time and so will Blu-ray,even with the talk of the 4k stuff, from what I have read it would only benefit people with massive screen's,people who have room for them and can afford them.
Relax and buy your Blu's and enjoy. |

Blu-Rays shouldn't go fast like DVDs. Since DVDs kinda got screwed by HDTVs coming out that's pretty much why they went bad so fast. Blu-Ray was developed for HDTVs, so like VHS back in its time, Blu-Ray will probably be here to stay.

The only threat I see is the digital downloading crap. Even though it's nowhere near as desirable as owning physical media, it could improve in time and become the defacto sales model for all future movies (I'm just saying it could happen; I'd personally rather it not).
Otherwise, 4k is the only other possible video format change that could hit home video, and even then it'll still use Blu-Ray dsics. So as it is, Blu-Ray remains unchallenged.

Prices of blu's aren't high. Hang out in the deals subforum and you will see. Depending on where you live you may need to order online to get some of these deals but if you can exercise restraint and patience you don't have to pay a lot of money to build a good collection.
