Glad you enjoyed the film and the 3D Bleed Orange.

Also had a chance to listen to Ridley Scott's 1999 feature commentary and he said to paraphrase, 'I'd like to go back and make another one, but this time explore where all of these machines came from and how we came to be, the origin.'

The DVD also featured Giger's original 1978 illustrations, with the same alien ships that are seen in Prometheus and Alien, including that big horseshoe spaceship and the cannon centered disc ship.

Speaking of the android - he was the only real scientist in the whole movie.
SPOILER:
That was a good line. The lady and the guy were more along the lines of explorers, so you're probably right. Sam Ham as the android, proven within the first few minutes of the film when he hits that perfect hoop shot riding a bike at the same time.

I saw Prometheus in digital IMAX 3D today. (The IMAX cut has a more vertical 2.0:1 aspect ratio, so I definitely recommend upgrading over RealD if that's an option.) It was absolutely the best theater experience I've had since Avatar. The futuristic visuals and the musical score are outstanding. The story leaves a lot of questions and plot holes to be interpreted and discussed by the viewers. I love movies like this that make you want to research symbolism and theorize about character motivations and overall message. (Read this essay AFTER you see the film.) It is a very stylish sci-fi horror prequel that ties in well with Alien and makes you think about creation, life, death, religion, and science.

The 3D is very good. Scenes are usually layered with back-,mid-, and foreground objects. Thankfully, the director never employs the 2D conventions of overusing depth of focus and over-the-shoulder conversation cams. Negative parallax objects are usually present, and pop-out is extended in a subtle, non-gimmicky manner to intensify certain scenes. The depth script didn't sabotage non-action moments.

The 3D reminded me most of Avatar's, but it doesn't maintain stereoscopic roundness nearly as well. There are many scenes where the interaxial distance between the cameras needed to be increased a little bit to achieve realistic volumetric dimensions. There are other shining moments, however, where depth is nice and strong. These included holograms, cockpits, rock formations, and dirtstorms.

Prometheus is one of the rare live-action movies filmed with 3D cameras that actually has a clever story and good 3D. I am excited at the prospect of owning the BD3D in October. Here's hoping they give us a full director's cut in 3D with the IMAX aspect ratio!

Movie - 5/5
Stereography - 4.5/5
Depth - 4/5
Pop-out - 3.5/5
Dimensionality - 4.5/5
Excellent review!

Saw it yesterday in 3D courtesy of my local theaters fathers get in for free promo. Overall it was a good movie but I wasn't totally blown away. Not as suspenseful as I remembered the Original Alien series were back the day. The 3D was a nice touch. Not much pop out but nice depth that added a lot of detail to the alien planet. Overall I give the movie 7.5/10 and 3D 8/10.

Question

That sounds fair enough. I asked someone who saw it over the weekend and they said they were confused by the gaps in the storyline but were happy with the 3D.

I think it really helps to familiarize with the original movie before seeing this one.

The only real question I have with Prometheus was:
[Show spoiler]I know the super humanoids were using the aliens as a biological type weapon, but why did the one who woke up, want to kill the humans he supposedly created? Unless he's grumpy when he wakes up after 2000+ years?

[Show spoiler]Read the essay linked in my review if you want a fun theory about Space Jesus.

The basic theme of the movie was that death is needed to create new life. The opening scene was an engineer purposefully drinking the black slime to sacrifice himself to give life to a young planet, probably Earth. It's likely that humanity's selfishness tainted the black slime 2,000 years ago and caused the creation of the unknown monsters that killed most of the engineers on LV-223. The humans from Prometheus then arrive and awake the remaining engineer in an effort to save the ridiculously old Weyland who is unwilling to just die and let his daughter have her inheritance. That makes the engineer even angrier, and he concludes that all humanity is evil and needs to be destroyed.

So the Alien vs. Predator movies
[Show spoiler]contradict the storyline in Prometheus. Do those movies not count in the Alien universe because they are cross-overs?

I just seen the movie last night and I thought the movie was very interesting. Story line did have some holes.
[Show spoiler]For example, does anybody know why the Droid put the contamination slime in the guys drink to cause the initial outbreak?

I thought the 3d was pretty decent...not the best, but certainly not the worst.

That sounds logical, but very deep and hard to catch on one view. Well done. Thanks.

One more question:
[Show spoiler]The cave paintings with the four (or five) black orbs... What might they be symbolic of? I'll take a look at your earlier link, but I'm thinking the Egg Vases?

That's true. I'm sure Ridley Scott would be able to explain it in detail, as he did in the 1999 Alien Commentary.

No, I think they're cross overs as you suggest, just to cash in on the concept.

[Show spoiler]Orange 11 I agree with, and I also imagine the Android Sam Hamm is also following orders from the elderly Weyland (Guy Pearce), in an effort to experiment on the expendable crew and incubate the biological weapon "Aliens". Some people I spoke with never caught the moment when the Android spiked the drink with the egg/black slime parasites. I like the moment the host guy sees worms squirming in his eyes.

Useless Trivia: SLIGHT SPOILER
Flipping through some channels, Jay Leno on TV just mentioned Prometheus and the scene with the operation extraction scene, comparing it to some book about pregnancy or something.

[Show spoiler]I think it's because he wanted to see if it would create/spawn one of the engineers because the android asked the drunkie how far he was willing to go to meet/speak to their creators. Of course, when senior weyland found out that the engineers weren't alive and present, he told android to "try harder".

FYI the aliens vs predators storyline is not canon to the alien universe.

I'd like to take credit for that analysis, but I actually got it from the essay.

[Show spoiler]Maybe I'm being too superficial, but I think the cave painting orbs just represented stars. They were maps painted to show the humans how to get to LV-223 and meet their creators when they mature enough to invent space travel. Of course, that was pre-catastrophic event when the engineers still approved of the humans.
