One big issue for people is room. You need a dedicated space and dedicated equipment. My friends and I debate this often. If we had the room, we would not get the TV because we can spend on the money on a proper projection set up. But since none of us have a basement we can turn into a home theater or a living room with enough space, this TV would work. It is much easier for us to put this into a room and forget it.

You also have to realize that not everyone knows about the viewing distance or other things people who are tech savvy know. They just think having a big TV is way better than a projector.

Although its recommended to have some light control for televisions, its not necessary, nor does it affect the picture quality as greatly as it does for projection.

Thank you, for making what I was saying more clear!

I was at my local Fry's this past Labor Day to pick up a pair of Infinity Primus towers for my two-channel system (during their famous "$99 per speaker" sale on these things), and had the chance to see the 80" Sharp on display and then noticed the 90" in a box, which they refused to demo...the box to that thing looked ridiculously massive...I'd love to have that in my house, but there's no way we'd have the cash or the space.

Originally, our plan was to move from a 50" rear projection unit (a Sony SXRD we have now) to one of Sharp's 70" LCDs, but after seeing the 80 in action in the store...well...I kinda want that...

But, yeah -- that 90" to me would be a great alternative to a front projection setup for those who prefer one-piece, direct-view television systems instead of the projector route (such as myself) . It just doesn't come cheap, at all...

Projected video is different. You will get much brighter picture from that flat screen.

Projectors may need bulbs and of course they need a screen and a room suitable.

I love projectors but those big Sharps are plug and play and fairly nice I think.

I've been a projector guy since my first projector in 1999 and I'll stay with projectors but those big Sharps are fairly nice.

Oh, I'm aware of that -- and it's one of the primary reasons I don't care for projected video -- but I was just mentioning that it could be considered an "alternative" for some people cross-shopping the two approaches at screen sizes that large.

Right. Indeed, rear-projection displays, such as my own Sony SXRD, require the bulb/lamp changes as well (we are on our second) as it's just a caveat of the tech type.

I happen to be -- along with my wife -- a one-piece, plug-it-in-and-adjust-it television system person, thus why we're looking at screen sizes now 70 inches and larger...

Funny this thread popped up. I've been dragging my wife to view TV's and one store had the 80" on display. She watched it for a few seconds and turned to me and said "for that price and size, why not get a projector?"

I get that front projector setups are not for everyone. You have to have a more dedicated space to really make use of all of what one can do.

That being said, for $10K I could build a moderate setup for an entire room...
