I just recently bought a
Mac book pro 13" it's 2.53 ghz dual core 4g ddr3 ram 250gb hard drive and super drive for 150$ the reason it was 150$ is cause it had "water damage" I origionally was just trying to get it for the screen cause my GF's Mac 15" screen is broken, but when I met with the seller It was 13 he had said 15 but it was in such perfect condition I figured this guy was a tard and bought it started out general trouble shooting battery is good forget what it's called but power plug module is good hd and optical drive are good and ram. that leaves the motherboard and keyboard or chords i started out by using ethynal solvent and toothbrush and q-tips and cleaned the entire motherboard and I'm talking I spent two hours with magnifying glass and qtips and removed every sugar water stain or debris and used rice and two adjacent fans to fast dry it/ it looks brand new in mint condition no signs of water damage or any dmg at all. Did general cleaning of rest of parts and accessories and rebooked everything up. Green power light came for 2 secs then very dim red light sometimes flashing...I honestly don't think the motherboard is bad I will post pictures of everything my last option now is im going to try and replace keyboard I took it off reluctantly(pain in the ass for Mac)and I can find small trace of waterdamage like marks where it short circuited. But the guy I bought this from somehow cleaned this thing quite well and went through a lot of technically D Savy procedures to sell far over 150$ just the screen alone sells for that not to mention ram hd sd case motherboard if good and battery and the only way I am testing these accessories out is my gfs busted ass Mac pro 15 no sreen and inoperable mouse pad So basically what I'm looking for is some suggestions on some testing techniques of components How can I m know for sure what pieces are good? Any advice of help is appreciated. Also sorry I posted this off topic but just joined and am not privileged enough to have my own thread |

I love Sophos Antivirus for my Macbook Pro, free, and scans my whole system or certain folders and is always running in the background (doesn't affect other programs, barely takes up power but will catch something fishy and allows me to remove it quickly. I love it.

Does anybody else specifically not use an antivirus program?
Which leads me to a second question, how do people get viruses anyway? (never had one) I just don't download/execute things I shouldn't be, and I don't go to websites that I shouldn't be... the best antivirus is oneself.

I tend to run Microsoft Security Essentials, its very baseline, no fancy features. I also occasionally run malwarebytes and emisofts A squared malware scanner if I get that "oh crap what did I just do" feeling. Generally if I'm going to do anything sketchy online and visit sites that are new to me, I try to do it in Firefox with noscript/adblock/ and noflash running until I can feel it out, and then of course, not opening mail that looks fishy and deleting anything with FW: in the subject line.

I would strongly recommend the AVG antivirus. I have been using it for a couple of years and I had no problems with it. It is easy to use and has a variety of options as well. To me it is much better than Kaspersky itself.

I used to rely just on standard Windows stuff and some freeware (Clamware and Spybot primarily, which work just fine and dandy). Then I took a class that brought up the important of protecting one's system, and I was inspired to upgrade pronto. The standard Windows firewall just doesn't protect that effectively (I was told it protects things from coming in, but not necessarily from things going out). It was also emphasized that an all-in-one security suite is best; having multiple programs handling different aspects can cause conflicts and mess up your system.
So, I wanted to get Norton's Security Suite. It's got the most features and is one of the highest-rates packages out there. They only sell to people within the US though. I would up getting Bitedefender, which was pretty highly-rated, had all the features I wanted, and was reasonably priced. I'm pretty happy with it so far.

Viruses and trojans aren't the only thing though; major companies (like Google) will plant cookies, spyware, and other things to track users' whereabouts and activities, and dig up personal information. Companies will pay to exchange information on tracked users. Not to mention, there is always the threat of hackers. Thus, it's always useful to have good security software, safe browsing practices, and to occasionally clean out your cookies/history.

You probably have a virus, trojan, etc, without even knowing it. There are so many ways to get one. Plenty of free ones, such as Microsoft Security Essentials, if you don't want to pay for a security package. Currently I use Norton Internet Security. |

think this scenario : company with all malicious etc sites blocked, so users are not able no access those. every precaution taken, still virus finds its way to server. You think so little, but there are people who must think safety of company, safety of data, etc. think of stuxnet - it penetrated firewalls and even some virus scanners. Oh yes, I do have virus software. and firewall - and damn right they are up to date. have fun browsing without ones, its like playing russian roulette. it`s not that you avoid them (malicious files) - they will find you. good place to start is to google port scanning ... I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him ... ? Anything interesting in Nef's Trade Thread do please PM me ! |

I'm reading up on trojan.happili right now; it's a real b*stard to get rid of apparently. Like many backdoors, they escape detection by A/V software, and even when A/V software recognize its presence, they're not equipped to handle it. Good luck with the fight, supersix4.

thankfully it was a gaming rig so while there was some minor sensitive stuff on there, it wasn't full fledged vip stuff (if any of it made it back out ) and because i was downloading in game skins and all kinds of patches off websites i never put any of my own stuff out there. yeah malbytes got rid of that file then after reboot the same redirect popped up blocking access to the task manager, had to trick it into shutting down the pc to get it to let me start using it. Then a total shutdown and safe mode boot got me another trojan.fake or something that got removed and after that reboot i left my network card out and it ran BUTT slow so i didn't even attempt to try anything else. Just grabbed my disks and we'll start new lol just was going to redo and i got a message your old files will be saved as windows old yeah save my virus files so I guess with windows 7 you have to open a tab to get to the format button.
