Yay for less DNR! This is going home.
Hands off the compression button music industry!!
Hands of the DNR button Blu Ray producers! Films are supposed to have grain! |

I know that some of the EU SE DVDs (France, Scandinavia and the UK) apparently have an additional audio commentary with cinematographer Jost Vacano:
Audio Commentary with cinematographer Jost Vacano and Marko Kregel (in German with optional subtitles in English, Spanish or Portuguese) Of the released versions, it looks like it's on the 2010 cut FSK-16 German SteelBook BD only, but according to DTM.at, it may be on the new German BD (which is now uncut at FSK-16)! I pray it will still include English subtitles. Has anyone heard this one? Is it any good?

It looks alright. There is a bit of contrast boosting in there it seems, so I imagine we might lose a bit of shadow detail too, as well as blowing out some whites perhaps. Lots of grain though which is good.
In fact the transfer looks very similar to the one Lethal Weapon got. |

Not sure what the difference is but this is a new transfer from restoration.

Well, I've got the Aussie Special Edition release, and it already has a DTS-HD MA 5.1 track (and I bet it's the same one used in this new disc), a pretty darned good PQ and at least one of the "new" extras, so this isn't so appealing as an upgrade.
Out of curiosity, why is this one called the "Ultimate Rekall Edition"? Is there some significance to the spelling that I'm not seeing? |

I must say, as I understand it, StudioCanal and their former partner companies have presented some odd options with this title. For instance, the 2008-2009 releases, such as the original UK BD and original Australian BD. have no real extras, but the 2010 releases in some markets do--in particular, the cut German SteelBook has many more extras than the uncut German SteelBook, and the latter appears to mirror the Dutch and French SteelBooks. Further, of the three forthcoming Ultimate Rekall Edition BDs, the UK seems to get the least extras, with the French BD appearing to have some French-friendly extras, and the German BD (now uncut at FSK-16) perhaps having some exclusives, including the German-language Jost Vacano commentary. Complicating the situation is the fact that Lionsgate and StudioCanal seem to have come to some sort of exchange of materials, so many in the American release thread are posting early reviews of the UK and French Ultimate Rekall Edition BDs, apparently assuming that they will mirror the US Mind-Bending Edition, when that may well not be the case.

I'm curious whether, other than the new extras, the SE release in Australia is essentially the same as this new release anyway? It's from StudioCanal, and has MPEG-4 AVC video and DTS-HD MA audio, the same as the new one. I span it up on my PC and did side-by-side comparisons with the screenshots linked earlier in this thread, and to me it certainly seems to match the screens for the new encode, both in details and colour palette. It's being released here in AUS towards the end of the year, but that's no surprise, because the previous two releases we've had have been discontinued. |
