so i got my new receiver hooked up and did the sound calibration. i got my bluetooth controller hooked up and my iphone plays music through it without any issues.

after that i want to demo something so i choose the lobby scene from the matrix.

when i put the movie in and it starts playing, i notice that the display says "PCM" instead of Dolby TrueHD like it should.

is there a setting on the receiver itself i need to set before it'll display the correct sound output?

i've checked the bd player (new 320gb ps3) to see if it's set correctly, and all the choices are selected.

If I understand this right all PS3 audio out is in PCM format. I also had an HDMI setup to the receiver to the TV. I believe you are hearing it correctly. Whatever you do don't select all the options on the PS3 as this could max out your speakers and blow them out. Also select what sounds best not whats going to be the loudest your system can handle.

I know you said you checked all the settings, and I'm thinking you mean all of the audio formatts, but make sure it's set to 'Bitstream'.

I have seen that change on my, where I know I had it on 'Bitstream' and it changed to 'PCM', I noticed this happens sometimes when I do an update, and I believe an new update was recent.

I'm trying to remember where you loof for it. I will update when I remember, or maybe not if you fix before then.

*********** EDIT ************

It’s under ‘Settings’ > ‘Video Settings’ > ‘BD/DVD Audio Output Format (HDMI)’ > ‘Bitstream

You can change the ps3 slim settings to bitstream and then the receiver will decode it and you will see TrueHd and DtsHd on the display

found the place to set the ps3 to bitstream.

display still says pcm.

if i uncheck all the linear pcm modes on the ps3, it displays stereo and only the front l/r speakers play.

Humm, I don't know much about Pioneer Elite AVR's, you may have to go into that thread and ask, but this does sound odd.

Are you connected via HDMI or Coax/Fiber. The receiver needs to be connected to the PS/3 via HDMI in order to get the lossless codecs to work right (badwidth limitations on the other connection types)

Just a thought
Thanks,

It says it right in the user manual. If you do not have the selected output from your PS3 to your receiver it will send the signal anyway and max out your system.

Can you point that out a little bit better? Or copy and paste with the link, it seems as if your taking something out of context.

Some, many of the older blu-ray movies, warner bros esp, were set to default to DD or PCM. So you might have to go into the audio setup of the movie so that you will get lossless LPCM or DDTHD.

It's simple really. Why would you select a 7.1,..etc for a 5.1 setup? Why would you select TrueHD if your receiver doesn't support the capability?

I'm not sure what this statement has to do with showing us the quote or even when you said:

I don't have the specific page with me but when I selected all the audio options the sound was terrible to my ear drum.

the receiver would matrix down to 5.1 there is no way it would blow your speakers . now on the other hand if you turned the volume up in the ps3 to max output in your media player that could cause the signal to clip and cause speaker damage this must be what your talking about .

so after 4 months of use with my new receiver, i have an update or sorts.

first, i LOVE the elite. it's been working flawlessly and has had no problems whatsoever so far. i did get the 4 year extended warranty on it just in case.

and i posted that my old receiver was outside the extended warranty date when it went kaput. come to find out, it wasn't. so i took it back to best buy and had the geek squad take a look at it.

i got a call yesterday and they said it can't be fixed. they are authorizing a "swap-out" on it so i gotta go by and see what's up.

does anyone know anything about the process i'll have to go through for the swap? i've never had to use the geek squad for anything so i don't know the actual policy about the swap.

will it be for the msrp of the product at the time i bought it or for the current market value?

will it be for the price i paid at the time? i was an employee at best buy when i bought it so i got it at a pretty good discount.

any information is greatly appreciated.
