Caligula was also pushed back, but Amazon supposedly has it exclusively. Same company - Image Entertainment. Could be the case here.

I still need to see the original. I love the remake.

Probably never, the movie was lucky to get a Blu-ray release in its home country of America. It's really nothing more than a cult hit, even here in the U.S. Image probably pushed it out only because the remake had hit theaters.

Being a cult hit is more than simple justification for a release surely, It has a huge following and is one of Carpenter's best. By his own admission he states that his Movies are held in much more regard in Europe than in the US, That should be reason enough for Universal (UK rights holder) to put it out

That's a shame. After all it is a better film than its successor.

Just a nitpick. The Blu-ray listing for the Actors and Director is for the remake, not the original.

Bump - Yeah, I've only recently noticed this.

I tried to amend the profile for this title, but the theatrical master for the 1976 version doesn't appear to be in the Movies database...

I tried to create it, but I was taken back to the homepage.

Any chance a tech-mod can sort this out?

There is a glaring hole in my collection where this film should be. Can't wait for a UK release of this film. Apart from being a cult classic it's also received high critical praise too. Probably won't make a difference but I live in hope.

I just got the french version, it's awesome. Same master as the US, but new encoding, it as the 5.1 remix, the original mono, the french mono mix, the music isolated track, audio commentary is subbed in french, and all the extras too. This film is a masterpiece.
Widescreen is better.

It looks nice. Any DNR, cropping etc? English subtitles?

Better encoding? Gotta have the best for this flick. The Image release is pretty hard to beat, of course.

I see there's also a German edition due in March...

Default Region Free (o_O?)

I am slightly confused. This website lists it down as Region A locked but the image uploaded of the back cover says ABC. Can anyone confirm if it is Region Free or not? Thanks

There's about 25 minutes of additional scoring on the german dub on the german edition of Assault on Precinct 13, which apparently was made / approved by Carpenter in 1979, according to german fans. The mind boggles. Google translate review link http://translate.google.com/translat...ctors-cut.html
Widescreen is better.

Yes, the french disc is basically the US disc with a better encode, and all bonus features with french subtitles.

The german is entirely restored to the correct metrocolor timing (thus, superior picture even if it comes from the same original transfert), and offers the original german dub with about 25 mn of additional music incorporated into the movie, and enhancing it.

I'm not sure, but it might be that Carpenter was dissatisfied with the original music tracks on Assault, (there's about 22 minutes of music in the picture, different from every other Carpenter movie were music is about two third of the films), so he might have finished the job for the Music and Effects tracks sent to the german in 1979, since by then he was successfull with Halloween.

Then he might have forgotten about it when he went into his career.

My feeling is, this different soundtrack with 25mn of more music should be available / restored on all versions of the film as an optional track, including english language and french language and others. Also the correct color timing should be restored on all versions (US discs, french discs etc.)

I'm watching it right now, and it's awesome.
Widescreen is better.
