You'll thank me in the morning.
I guess back to original (somewhat) question/inquiries, I would need to purchase another supercube 1 as a second sub? I don't think they're even manufactured anymore and I'm not buying used if even available. Plus I don't want to drop another $1K plus on another one even if available.

What are the hindrances of getting another sub of a different brand? My supercube rocks and I don't need to replace it. I just want to add another sub to my system. How about a supercube 2 or another Def Tech sub?

I guess I'm just confused with the whole buying the exact same sub as the one i own now. I obviously have an issue then. Someone enlighten me please.

I also have a friend recommending an Atlantic sub. Never heard of them. Anyone know anything about an Atlantic?

One last thing, I won't be building one

Having the same would be nice but isn't something you have to do. Big daddy has like around 11 subs in his HT & there might be 2 of them that are the same, Maybe.

Find a good subwoofer you can afford & you will be more then happy to have added it koover....

Thanx for the response Brent. I just read quite often that people strongly recommend when getting a second sub, to get the exact one for calibration purposes I guess. It just seems some people find it difficult to blend 2 different sub makers together. I'm thinking that may be optimal, but not anywhere near absolute.

I have seen that many times. Guess it all depends on how much you want to try to make it sound the best it can sound. 2 different good subwoofers can vary easily sound just as good as 2 of the same subwoofers IMO.

Hi Koover.

From Big Daddy's A Guide to Subwoofers (Part II):

Quote:
Use Identical Subwoofers
As a general rule, if you are using multiple subwoofers, it is best to use identical ones from the same manufacturer. Although using different subwoofers may work, equalization, level matching, and adjustments become much more difficult. In all the research on the use of multiple subwoofers, the experts have used identical subwoofers.

The Science Behind Identical Subwoofers: Assume we have a device with several metallic poles with a bob attached to them. The bobs are colored red, blue, and green. Each pole has a different length, thus having a different natural frequency of vibration. When the red bob is disturbed, it begins vibrating at its natural frequency. This in turn forces the attached bar to vibrate at the same frequency; and this forces the other attached red bob into vibrating at the same natural frequency. This is resonance - one bob vibrating at a given frequency forcing a second object with the same natural frequency into vibrational motion. However, the green and blue bobs would not resonate. This is because the frequency of the red bobs share the same natural frequency. The result is that the second red bob begins vibrating with a huge amplitude. Identical subwoofers will have the same natural frequency and can work together a lot easier to generate smoother low frequency sound.

Check out A Guide to Subwoofers (Part I) and A Guide to Subwoofers (Part II). Also very helpful is A Guide to Bass Management (Part I) and A Guide to Bass Management (Part II). All four of these have helped me immensely in understanding how all of this stuff works, and can really help you to get the most out of your setup.

I actually do have two different subwoofers from two different manufacturers and for the most part, they sound really great together and I am quite happy with them, but if I had to do it over again, I would probably get matching subs. I do occasionally notice that one of my subs has a tiny bit more mid-bass than the other one, and the other one seems to dig a tiny bit deeper on the lowest stuff than the other one.

I did find this if you're interested: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Definitive-T...769#vi-content It is a manufacturer refurbished Super Cube I for $675 with free shipping. Big Daddy has recommended that seller 'bahawaverunner' before, and he has a 99.6% rating out of over 8,100 sales.

I'm just trying to help you with all of your options and choices. Whatever choice you make, I'm sure you'll be much happier running two subs. Having two makes your overall room response much smoother in all seating positions, and since you have two of them, you can turn each of them down a bit, which will give you more headroom and reserve power, which makes everything much more dynamic, clean, and punchy.

Good luck!
Joe

Hey Joe, how are you? Good I hope. Long time no talk too
Thank you kindly for the link as I am extremely interested in getting this. That's a pretty good deal if it's refurbished to manufactures specs and condition.
Thanx for all advice on reading up on all the links you included. I have a lot to learn about the ins and outs of sound management. I've always been so into the listening and enjoyment part of great audio, but never delved into the ins and outs. I'll be sure to read up on this stuff.
Thanx again man.........

I'm doing alright buddy. Thanks for asking.

It says that it is manufacturer refurbished, so it's probably in as good shape or better than the one you own. Manufacturer refurbished is basically like a brand new product, because everything has to pass the same tests and inspections as their brand new products. I have an Epson 6500UB pj and an Onkyo 809 avr that are both manufacturer refurbished, and they both perform absolutely perfectly. It's not like buying a used product, it's actually much closer to buying a brand new product, but at huge savings.

I checked the reviews on that product from that seller, and all 9 reviews on it gave it 5/5 stars. That guy has been selling on there for over three years, and is one of the most trusted sellers on ebay. He seems to specialize in Def Tech products, and would probably be a good place to check for other speaker upgrades. I almost bought a Def Tech C/L/R 2002 from him for my center before I decided to go with the HTD that I have now.

Yes, Big Daddy has written some great threads that help to simplify and explain how all of this stuff works, and has helped me to make knowledgeable purchases and set up my system so much better than I could have by myself. There's nothing better than advice for improving what you already own, because it's like getting a free upgrade.

I noticed that your equipment in your sig has improved quite a bit in the last few months. You really should think about taking some HT gallery pics and starting your own HT thread. That's one sweet setup you've got there, and adding another sub is going to make it so much nicer.
Joe

Remember, too, that having two of these subs is not double the sound, ironic as it may seem. It's more like 1.5 times, or less, and you'll be doing sub adjustments to affect directionality as much as volume. It will affect directionality the most, and you need to be sure you're not placing them in such a way that they cancel each other out - they should go in odd corners, have furniture disrupting the line of sight, things like that. They won't be directional, having that down-firing radiator, which will help.

Break-in is useful, but don't expect an exponential increase in sound after a break-in period. The change will be slight, perhaps even imperceptable.

The fact that you can get a serious discount on these units is great. Have fun, and remember, Bring Your Familiar Source Material. It's a huge piece of your decision. It sounds like you might really be on to something here. I'm curious about what you discover.
Ruled out the FF4 doesn't have the cleanness and punch of my ported paradigm. I think i like ported better. (Sorry Koover for taking this on a tangent)

I was afraid of that. Actually, passive radiator can be very clear - but breaks up when you raise the volume. It's good to know this happened with the FF4's, I guess they're just not for every application.

I'am running four subwoofers, two ported and two sealed.

After running the full eight position Audyssey MultEQ XT32 Sub EQ HT calibration,
my subs now sound and "feel" great blended together.

It's amazing, the difference that four properly calibrated subs, make in a HT.
Find somebody with four subwoofers and have them play the train wreck scene,
from the movie Super 8.

Nuff said.
