Nothing really is stopping people from ordering and then canceling. Its more of a incentive to go watch the movie and if you like it keep the pre order. Either way the studio still gets money from the free tickets.

The studio can't really get money from something that is free. Tickets purchased with these fandango promo codes will count towards the gross, but someone is eating the cost of these tickets.

And, no, nobody will care if you pre-order, use the ticket, then cancel. They aren't expecting anyone to commit to buying a movie they haven't seen. I can only imagine that they have a set number alloted and they think of it similar to the promo screenings studios have in many markets prior to release. Radio stations/business will hand out free tickets and the studio hopes it creates some positive word of mouth within those markets. At the same time, this method makes little sense to me since you either have to be browsing some blu-ray/dvd/deals forum or you're so hyped for "Ted" that you've already gone to Amazon's product page to order it... in that case, you were probably going to pay to see it anyway. It definitely doesn't make total sense to me, but I'll take it.

Just a strange world we live in where you can preorder a dvd/blu for a movie that hasn't even been released yet theatrically and get free Movie Cash on top of that. I guess I am getting old.

Just go through to purchase a ticket for your desired show time and check the box to use a gift certificate or code and when you get to the required step enter the code Amazon sent you.

Saw this last night. Definitely a buy when it comes out. Crazy stuff and the love for Sam Jones (Flash Gordon) was off the chain. Good flick, if a tad anti-semetic. I'd give it 3.5 out of 5 stars.
