That is a very good question and one I'm sure which has been considered by the more knowledgeable and rich than the two of us.

From what I can tell, the release has been held back pending a higher saturation level of home 3D. Why else tie it to some 3D Panny purchase (ok, I can think of other reasons)?

All of that being said, I'd have taken the up front dough that a 3D Avatar blu ray release would have generated after the contract with Panny was up. By 2015 or so (or earlier), there may be some smart, inventive movie makers who equal or surpass what was a very, very well done film. As I said before, "Hugo" was just "outstanding" cinematography and I believe this approach to filmmaking will only get better.

But, what do I know? I just lifted my leg and pissed on a houseplant....hoping the big guy who feeds me doesn't figure it out.

Grrrrr.......

I think I'm going to have to get on the "Hugo" wagon. Before I couldn't understand why so many people liked this boring looking movie. But I guess I'll give it a try.

Why so we can double dip on another edition close to Avatar 2 with even more extras of course! XP lol

Okay, I'll play.

Right now the market is bare for movies that have both outstanding live-action 3D and quality, wide-appealing stories. Hugo is really the only movie that rivals Avatar in this regard. Fox could release Avatar now, and 95% of 3DTV owners would buy it. It's not like the money would stop coming after a year either. When people buy new 3DTVs, what do you think would be the number one demo disc sold for the purpose of trying out new setups? As more quality 3D movies get released, the hype surrounding Avatar as a must-own BD3D is going to fizzle out.

If Fox waits and releases Avatar in 2015 around Avatar 2's theatrical release, they will be able to generate a larger buzz for the Avatar series, using both films to promote each other and synergistically maximize profits. At that time, more consumers will own 3DTVs, and Avatar will be able to sell at its initial full retail price to more people.

Like I said, I have nothing but respect for Martin Scorsese. While I liked the movie (no spoilers needed here), I found it to be a somewhat self indulgent (possibly remove "self") effort by a man who has more talent in his wagging little tail than I have in my entire food and water dishes combined (and I get some pretty doggone good food as well as filtered water). Some people liked the storyline and some didn't. I have yet to hear "anyone" complain about the cinematography. Visually, I give it 5+ "woofs". If you have a killer 3D setup, Cine"Max" sez check it out.

You don't have to take my word for it. Try googling "James Cameron Hugo 3D".

As Cameron told The Hollywood Reporter, "It is magical to watch. This is absolutely the best 3D cinematography I've ever seen."

and that's coming from some guy who knows a little bit about 3D and has no dog in this fight.

lol believe me, the movie is indeed very boring.... but if you can pick it up for under $20, I think the 3D effects are worth it. If it had not been for the 3D, I'd have fallen asleep. Nothing about the plot/story was interesting, imo

I can't understand how people who love to watch movies finds a movie that covers actual cinematic history as boring... I suppose maybe if you're not into history at all...

Some people have short attention spans. If there no boom, they no watch. Anyway, I thought it was a superb film and I feel honored to live in the generation that got to see it.

You are always going to get a difference of opinion on whether a movie was good, bad, boring, exciting, etc. What I have "not" heard is "Hugo's cinematography was really amateurish, and basically kind of sucked." (Though there may be people out there who think that )

I actually liked the first part of the movie better than when they got into the "history" part of the film. It set the stage for everything and the two "child" actors were terrific (so was Ben Kingsley, of course, but that goes without saying).

Now when the FRELL will they release 3D Avatar blu ray???? I still say that the longer they wait to release it, the more chance they take that more quality 3D movies will come out which are shot expertly. While Avatar changed how many thought about 3D, it isn't going to stand out forever. In fact, it's already got some company. People who have 3D setups, will buy it and people who buy new 3D setups will buy it. Why not get the $$$ upfront?

Yeah, if I were Fox, I'd release it around mid November this year, and I'd use Titantic 3D blu-ray to promote it, and maybe some 3D movie playing in the theater around November.

Then in 2015 or whenever Avatar 2 comes out, I'd release the extended edition.

Seems like a smart move to me.....I'll frelling buy it; just not from the ebay scalpers. Unless it dropped right in my lap for about $30.

I'd love to watch it on my HT. It occasionally comes out on HBO in 3D, but the resolution isn't quite up to the frame packing standard.

To each his own on the Hugo thing lol. 3D looks beautiful, I have a hard time understanding how anyone could watch it more than once though.

AVATAR, eh. Not watched it in a while. Need to put this one in again.

By myself, no, I probably wouldn't watch it again, but to show to someone else who has not seen the movie, I have no problem watching it again with them. I like the movie, but then I am a big history buff, so I really enjoy the historical cinematic portions of this movie.

SO what is the scalper pricing for Avatar 3D on eBay by now - over $100? I got mine for $60 about 3 months ago, so that's only about double the $30 average price of a 3D movie... I don't mind paying that for a reference quality Blu-ray, very glad I bought it when I had the chance. At least now I'm not all fidgeting and stressed-out about the possible release date...

True that. I got it with the glasses kit something like a week before it was supposed to be on the shelves. Glad I have it too.

Talking about boring....I am trying to wath some of my collection and I am finding Tintin to be most boring of all on a 3rd rewatch. As wonderful as the graphics and 3D are, the acting feels so scripted now that I look closely. Everything seems like a play and there is no spontaneity ! They messed up the music as well and its hard to associate that crapy musical score with Tintin franchise (for example, you will know immediately if you hear scores from other franchises like Indian jones, Harry poter)....
