Default Jurassic Park Possible Faulty disc?

Not sure if this has been asked before but, I have the German steelbook trilogy of JP and I noticed that in the first film there's lots of pixelation and distortion when you see sky scenes such as the first glimspe of the dinos, also with the sick dino too there's distortion in the sky. Could I possibly have a faulty disc or was it a bad transfer?

My UK (Universal 100 edition) was fine, and there were no reports of such pixelation in the reviews of the US trilogy to my knowledge... I'm guessing Universal are using the same transfer worldwide for this release, please correct me if anyone knows differently. Bad disc? Check the screenshots for the US review and see if you can find any scenes to compare with.

Someone did mention flickering or some kind of distortion, I think it was the first time we see dinosaurs in the movie (which would coincide with your problem). It was transfer related. I think someone made a .GIF.

Just read some of the comments for the trilogy in this site and it seems there are some very unhappy people, just like me. Some only gave the picture quality 0.5 our of 5 and even 1 said the quality was worse than DVD. Glad I'm not the only one experiencing picture problems, maybe Universal will issue a replacement program soon.

Isn't the 'error' you're referring to, simply thicker grain because the shot is an optical?
By the way, most complaints are about how the entire movie looks. There's definitely room for improvement on all three movies.
Blu-ray releases should be perfect representations of their cinema counterparts.

The ghosting in certain sections is annoying too. In JP1, the scene with Tim on the electric fence (timestamp 1:43:09) is absolutely full of double imaging.

They should make a Digibook of the first Jurassic Park.

It could use this Steelbook cover art:

(without banners of course)

I'd so buy that!

Oddly when I tried to play the JP tune in my head, my noggin' came up with the Robocop theme. Then it went over to Disney's The Black Hole theme.

It's Robocop and VINCENT versus Raptors and Maximilian. It's the years greatest mash-up! Jurassic Black Hole Cop.

I apologize if this has been resolved already, but the thread is 122 pages long and I couldn't find an answer in the most recent few pages.

Are the original burned-in location titles still present on this UK release of the trilogy for all the films?

I'm referring to things like "Isla Nublar - 120 Miles West of Costa Rica" during the first scene of JP, "Mano De Dios Amber Mine - Dominican Republic" in the next scene, "Badlands - Near Snakewater, Montana" in the next and such.

I know for the Bourne movies we got the original titles in the US, while Universal ditched them in the UK, giving you guys player-generated replacement titles, which I'm not a fan of.

They do it because your discs are sold across Europe and it's easier to display the titles in multiple languages if they're player-generated.

It may seem like a small issue, but it's a big one to me.

Can anyone give me a definitive answer that these are still present on the UK set?

If so I'm going to finally buy the set now that it's down at £12 in the new, smaller packaging.

Checking in, can anyone help with my question above regarding burned-in location titles?

Hi James,
I can relate — it's not such a small issue. Player-generated titles can be incredibly ugly, and often out of keeping with the film's visual design. (Lord of the Rings, for instance.)

Anyway, I've got the UK set in its original digipak release. I've just checked, and the location titles are definitely burnt-in, not player-generated. On the first film, you can even see the telecine wobble in the titles that's (sadly) present throughout the film.

Hope that helps.

Thank you so much!!! Most grateful.

I'll take some wobble over player-generated titles any day.

At least I don't expect to own this more than a year, you can bet a new BD of the first film at least will come out next year after they remaster it from the negative for the 3D anniversary re-release.

Just to be clear, they're burned-in on both films, right?

The Lost World has a title saying "Isla Sorna - 87 Miles Southwest of Isla Nublar" on the opening shot.

DVDs always seemed to be at their cheapest on release week, then they stayed expensive for a couple of years before ever getting any real discount. Not so with BDs, which can infuriatingly go on sale within a year for a fraction of their original cost. Ruins any incentive to buy them the week of release. This is exactly why I held off on the extortionately priced Jurassic Park and BTTF sets. (That and the fact that I hate the original cardboard packaging in both the US and UK and was waiting for a standard case)
