I watched New Rose Hotel a couple of nights ago and Johnny Mnemonic isn't the worst William Gibson adaptation.

For $10-$13 this movie is a great buy.. But, only if its superior to the DVD. Which I have.

I think its the dumbest thing to judge someone based on the movie they like.. Because in the same sense.. THOSE people probably enjoy some horrible movies in the eyes of a majority also. However, those types of people are usually kids or adults with minimal smarts and lack ability to process common sense practices.

But, I agree with the other guys comment on the cover art. Could have done a lot better with a soon to be cult classic like this. Same with the Equilibrium cover art. Maybe its not the offical art. lets hope not

Interesting how you say at the end of the review that 'The Matrix beat William Gibson at his own game'. That's just ridiculous.

Are you aware of Gibson's first novel Neuromancer? Are you aware it was written in 1984? How about his first short, Burning Chrome, written in 1981? Gibson's ideas were far ahead of its time, and much of the ideas behind the Matrix are pulled straight out Neuromancer. Hell, the title itself was pulled out of that novel. It's a wonder Gibson didn't sue. Now, I don't want you to think I'm some sort of cyberspace/Gibson fanboy. Johnny Mnemonic is a terrible film, can't believe that man himself wrote it. But Jeez, there is more relevance in Gibson novels like Neuromancer and Mona Lisa Overdrive than in the Wachowski brothers put together.

Sorry for my little rant.

fwiw, there's another review (with comparison snaps) at dvdbeaver. Looks to me like the Japanese Sony is way better PQ than this Image thing.

Hope this isn't going to be Image's status quo with respect to their putting out the rest of Sony's back catalog.

Default Incorrect runtime listed on review?

Either the runtime listed for the review is incorrect, or the reviewer is confused about what version of Johnny Mnemonic he watched; the currently listed time as of writing this is 103 minutes, which is the length of the longer Japanese cut (referenced in the end of the review), whereas the time listed on the dvdbeaver site (as well as the amazon.co.jp site -- go figure) is 96 minutes.

Both Movietyme and Planetaxel has confirmed it region A locked.

Pay no attention to what user swatdb entered in the blu-ray.com database as his information is often, if not always, grossly incorrect (could a moderator please reprimand alternatively ban that user?).

The Japan version is only in SD as an extra on the JP disc. The US version is the main feature on the Japanese blu-ray.

Ok, but it should still play. From the HDD review.

Quote:
Japanese "Director's Cut" of the film, also known as 'JM' (SD, 103 min) - It's a bit of a pain to find on the menu (it's in the fourth tab, as the top option on the list, which is by itself), but this is why this particular release of 'JM' is special. You ever want to see the extended cut of the film, which, as detailed by other sites (sorry, I'm not a 'JM' expert), has a few different scenes, including more Kitano and Lundgren, added score elements, and a few cut changes. Yes, being in SD is a problem, and the lack of English subtitles may get in the way for some, but for hardcore fans, this right here is one of the coolest damn features you could get, and it's playable on any Blu-ray player, regardless of region, due to the A/B/C coding of the disc. Sounds like a win to me! Please note, pop-up menus are disabled on this version of the film. Treat it like a DVD.

True but it's a lot of money to get a poor quality copy of the movie. I would just get the US release on blu and try to find the JP DVD edition on ebay or another cheaper source.

*bump*

Tempted to get this, its a pretty good upgrade from the DVD version I've seen (4:3, looked like a VHS tape!). I like the movie although only 10min of it are the main highlight for me & the rest is a bit of a mess Unfortunate as it could've been a low-budget masterpiece
I have a region free DVD/bluray player
