That's what my wife did after I lost my job last year May (company bought out and closed). She worked an extra unpaid day a week for a whole year just for medical and dental. Now that I have a new job with benefits she's back to 3 days a week.

Good luck!

i work @ WPS (WI Physicians Service)

they opened a call center near where i live after Triwest subcontracted WPS to do the claims processing on the Tricare west contract.

WPS does a lot of other Medicare contracts....so they aren't closing down as a whole....just the call center i work in.

for anyone w/experience in this....we found out what kind of severance we'll get if we stick it out until the end of the contract.

1 week for every 2 years you've worked for them.

so for 8 years of service, i'll get 4 weeks of pay.

is this descent or am i taking it up the @$$ if i stick it out??

eh, it's not bad. my last call center did 3 weeks of severance and I only worked a year with them (was making about $14 an hour with them)

Not bad, but not great. Years ago, a new plant manager decided on "a different direction" with my department, so I found myself without a job. Unfortunately, the company was going through bankruptcy, so all prior policies were null and void. I had 15 years with the company, which should have earned me 15 weeks of severance. I got 3 weeks...

Also, remember you should get paid for unused vacation, and typically companies accrue vacation days throughout the year for the following year. So, if you leave at the end of June next year, for example, you'll not only get paid for all unused 2013 vacation, but you should also get paid for 1/2 of your 2014 vacation days.

My advice? Don't take any vacation next year, as it's more $$ in your pocket.

I'll play the devils advocate:

If you stay and get the tuition reimbursement then you get to get you severance, you get college credits you do not have to come out of pocket for. The closer you are to your degree makes you more marketable. the less you have to pay for your degree means more savings in the long run.

Its always easier to find a job while you have one. I can't explain it. Its either feast or famine. Akin to getting a woman/ or man when you already have one. Potential mates see that you already have what it takes to gain someones trust. Potential employers see you as being an asset since you are employed.

On the flip side: If you leave your job in pursuit of a new one, you will have to find a job that will give you at the minimum what you are getting now. Makes sense but who wants to stay in the same place for long. I like to try to get my raise in the door going in. Who knows when they will see fit to give you one.

I would remove my self from the situation and look at it from the outside looking in. View the 360 and see whats best for you. Personally Id stay employed. Id get the college credits/tuition reimbursement get the severance. They may view you as being loyal and want to move you to a diff division.

Jobs are scarce. Job market seems to dictate that if you are looking for work you are willing to work for a lil less than what you are making currently. Id shovel sh!t in a cows ass to pay rent and support my family.... but do you really want to go there.

Well, back to work today and found out some interesting news.

They aren’t accepting new applicants to the tuition reimbursement program (which is fine b/c I was already approved)….but they are only paying for the fall semester. They aren’t going to pay for the spring semester @ all.

So that makes my decision a little easier. I’m going to wait and find out how much I’m approved for w/the financial aid and then start shopping around for a new job when I know when my classes are.

No point in being locked in here for 1 semester if I can find a better paying job.

I go in next Thursday to register for classes, after that, when I know when they are as far as times and days of the week…..i’m gonna get my resume polished up and start looking around. If I can get a day time job and make something in the $14/hour range….i can make that work.

Anything lower than that I’m not going to leave for. If I can’t find anything I’ll stick it out until the end and take unemployment and concentrate on school.

Good luck to you sir!

This has only happened to me once. I was working at Montgomery Wards when they went out of business in 1999. We got one week's pay for every year of service if we stayed there until they released us. I was the detail clerk in the auto center. The mechanics were released on the very day that we were informed as repairs stopped immediately (it was actually the news media that informed us by calling to ask if it was true .) All other staff, including office personnel like myself were allowed to stay on and work the closeout sale, which as I recall took a couple of months. As the amount of merchandise shrank... people were released. People who asked to be released early were generally allowed to if others with less seniority wanted to stay longer.

Thanks for looking that over Ryan….i really appreciate the info!!

Well guys…I’m torn on what to do @ this point as far as staying here or finding something else.

I’m signed up for classes this coming semester w/the assumption that I’ll be doing school around my current work schedule. I’m still waiting to hear on my financial aid and how not being a full time student affects it.

Here are my options @ this point:

Option A: stay @ work through the fall semester, find a 2nd shift job and concentrate more on school during the day for the spring semester.

Option B: stick it out until the end, select classes next semester around my current work schedule and take the severance and unemployment for a while next summer.

I may decide on option B if I can get my unemployment extended by being a full time student.

I also have to check if I can get myself and the kids onto the state insurance and be covered when I do end up losing my job.

i think i've decided on what i'm going to do about losing my job.

i'm going to try and take 9 credits this coming semester, submit for tuition reimbursement through work, and stick it out until the end.

next semester i'm gonna try for 9 credits as well....possibly 12 if i can find something that doesn't have a huge work load.

i'll collect my severance from work, collect unemployment for a couple of months, get the kids onto a state Medicaid insurance plan, and try to take 6 or 9 credits during the summer while i'm on unemployment.

i'm also going to try and swing staying home w/the kids during the summer some days and save us some money on babysitting costs as well.

then when school starts up in Sept. again, i'll start looking for a 2nd shift job so i can continue w/school in the morning and early afternoon and start making some money again.
