So agreed. Inception was great in the theater, but does not hold up to that on home-viewing (it's still fine, though). His 'Batman' films even less so. I have (slim) hopes that The Dark Knight Rises will be better than its prequels, but I don't put those two on the superhero pedestal that they popularly enjoy.

Going really light on the sale this go-round. So many other titles to pick up - I mean, this fall is going to be brutal - I've got to keep things in check. Plus even though it's no guarantee Criterion will have a website sale at 100k fans, they are sitting at +99k right now so that's something to look at. Esp since I have $20 in coupons for it!

Nope. Criterion loves Polanski, Paramount has shown absolutely zero interest in releasing it themselves (though that hardly sets it apart) and the RB newsletter clue put Paramount titles more in play but really, if you roll that all into one big ball all it amounts to is wishful thinking.

Oh, and they've been in the habit of pairing releases lately (two Soderbergh/Gray, two Stilman, two Dardenne and so forth) but that just makes it a slightly bigger ball of wishful thinking.

Does anyone have coupons that takes % off the entire order? My mystery coupon took 5$ off one item.

Im used to having 10-15% off the entire order in these sales.

Spidey...time to go region free.

Godard and Cassavetes films coming out in Europe...

Cassavetes in the UK:

Godard in France:

I know money is tight...believe me...I feel your pain. I just got a "mystery coupon" from B & N (which I think is for 30%) and might use it on the Czech New Wave set or some other Eclipse set (though I'm tempted to return my Berlin Alexanderplatz and "re-buy" it with the coup).

Sorry if this has been discussed but the pages are flowing fast esp since the Barnes Sale is in full swing... but will Criterion announce titles Friday or wait until Monday?
Stop the Replacing of original Studio Opening / Closing logos! These are becoming endangered and should be kept intact. They are part of film history.

I believe someone quoted the Facebook page saying it will be Monday.

There are people (Ghibli fans even) who don't like Howl's Moving Castle? Sad.

I didn't realize that Bale did Howl's voice in the English version. I think I've only ever watched it Subtitled. Actually, i suppose it would have been dubbed for it's theatrical run, so i would have heard his voice work then.

That's exactly it, you don't realise it's Bsle until you go to imdb. I watched the dub because I was bored and it has Lauren Bacall AND Jean Simmons in it.

What would you pick?
Once you watch the Three Colors Trilogy you'll want TDLOV. I am a Kieslowski fan. Another movie that is similar is Revanche, also excellent. However, you can't go wrong with your other choices.

Not anytime soon. Criterion lost the rights to Kind Hearts and Coronets back in 2010. Your only option right now is the UK blu-ray released by Optimum.

Man is that the truth. Inception is so much worse in subsequent viewings, after the thrill of seeing it the first time. Dark Knight is similar although I thought that had clear flaws from first viewing that most people don't seem to agree with.

Picked up just 2 in this sale - Harold and Maude and Shallow Grave. All I can afford right now

I feel the same way. On a 2nd viewing all the plots holes are much more evident to me. Besides Heath Ledgers performance, which I enjoy watching over and over, his movies really fall apart the more you watch them.

That was one of the titles they lost from Studiocanal. I'm willing to bet it was planned to be released though the Region A Studiocanal collection like LadyKillers was. I've already broke down and got all the current Ealing Studio releases from the UK. All great titles. Went the Day Well is especially brutal given when it was made. I wish Criterion could get some of these titles. Whiskey Galore and Passport to Pimlico are pretty hilarious and worth a viewing as well.

Got David Lean directs Noel Coward boxset. for $39.00 !! Wish we could get these prices year round.

Is The Double Life of Veronique a hard film to understand it's conveying themes? I've never seen it, but after reading through reviews on Amazon and such, I am really intrigued. I'll be popping over to B&N later to use a few coupons with the present deal and this film keeps grabbing my attention. I enjoy atmospheric films, recent one being The Tree of Life, so what do you think?

I don't believe it's hard to understand its themes at all, though they are inferred rather than directly conveyed - there is no real conventional 'plot'. Well, there is but it really is quite secondary to tone and atmosphere. Highly recommended; especially if you're familiar with later Kieslowski and filmmakers such as Bergman and Malick (which given your like of The Tree of Life I take it you are).

IMO Kieslowski's later work is on a whole other level then pretty much any director.
