United Kingdom Over priced limited/special editions that nobody seems to buy?

For me the definition has got to be the Senna 'limited collectors' edition

I mean it's one thing for an item to become rare and then be sold at an expensive price but this???

On the contrary I would say the Senna model looks like an incredibly high-quality collector's item actually worthy of the name for once. I believe the model is out of production and by itself seems to go for like £250-350. However it's no doubt more for racing fans than movie fans.

What I will never understand are all the limited 'special packaging' editions that rarely amount to more than plastic crap and an inconvenience in getting the discs out, and why people even give them a second look. The German ET ship probably takes the cake but there have been lots of other Rambo grenades, Terminator skulls, Fast and the Furious tyres and whathaveyou.

I agree, high end scale models of F1 cars and the like are very well made and very expensive to buy, so it seems in this case more like buying a scale model of one of Senna's cars and getting the collectors version of the film chucked in.

Most ones I've seen are pretty stupid though. I've only got one silly packaged one, and that's the Heathers locker, and only because it was cheaper than the standard edition blu-ray.

Things like the Rambo grenades, Alien head, POTA head, The Fly telepods etc don't interest me at all.

They used to for me - not that I have many (always fancied that Fly teleporter boxset) but I'm far more practical nowadays - I look at anything like that and wonder where the hell I'd put it. The last one I bought was the Terminator Salvation HMV plastic skull because it was a stupidly low price in a sale - way cheaper than the usual version - and now it sort-of balances inbetween my amarays looking stupid.

Hell, nowadays even the Bond boxset makes me sigh and wonder where it can go.

I have the Alien head (from the days when I had a bit more money), & the Fly telepod looks quite cool, but they are dust collectors. I was surprised that Universal didn't do a super deluxe Monster set, maybe a life size Frankenstein bust (or Creature or Wolfman) with a slot to house the discs. A limited run would have sold out very fast.

I like them but would also not have the shelf space most of the time (though I do have that Fly DVD teleport pod set ) - they look great in collections where there is a proper display space, as proven by a lot of the photos of members' collections on this forum, but if space is tight (and in the UK where price/square foot is the highest in Europe, this is almost always the case) they do often end up in the back of a cupboard or a cardboard box which makes the original purchase not worth it.

Some people are just plain crazy!!!! Where by they'll pay extra just for the packaging, a slipcase, steelbook, etc...at the end of the day that is just material, what matters is what is on the disc or discs...the actual movie.

Read the thread title and it's first thing I taught of

I'd love to know how many they made,
Considering how quickly the digibook sold out I'd expect only a very limited amount,
If it was closer to £100 I'd considering getting it

The Americans seem to get most of the 'special' special editions with mental price tags

The Scarface humidor was a fairly extreme price, $700 on release and currently $568
http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Scarface-Blu-ray/22119/
How it compares in price to an actual humidor I don't need to know

Neil Young Archives, currently $303
http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Neil-Y...Blu-ray/11552/

Sharpe's Classic Collection $313 on release, currently $220
http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Sharpe...Blu-ray/21999/

Alien Anthology Egg has been around the $180 mark since release
http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Alien-...Blu-ray/14206/

But the winner has to be this...
http://www.amazon.com/Potter-Hogwart...2299880&sr=1-6
I know there are 18-21yr olds now who grew up with the series, but the price of that set is really trying to take advantage

The only time I got "extras" was when I ordered the LOTR EE DVDs...got the two statue bookends with the FOTR and Minas Tirith with ROTK. I have to say the entire packaging was quite impressive.

I still have them...I use the statues to bookend my blu ray collection

I didn't get the smeagol...I don't know why, I felt it would be kind of creepy, with Gollum staring at me when I go to sleep...!

Those things are delicate - one of my statues lost a hand...

On a side note, there are rumors of extended Hobbit editions as well - I wonder if we'll get statues of trolls...!

Horses for courses as they say! I don't understand the facination with slipcases (extra bit of cardboard around your blu rays) but steelbooks are a great way to present a movie in a premium format, in these days of instant HD streaming they're a good incentive why people should cough up the money.

I had the Alien Quadrilogy DVD Alien Head, sold it to make some room (it loved dust!) and finance the BD ANthology purchase. Oh and I had The Fly transporter set too, that went for the exact same reason.

I put mine in the recycling. I could probably sell them but can't be bothered.

You should, I sold all the Disney slipcases when I was collecting the blu rays to finance further purchases. Doesnt effect the resale value either as when I sold them all on (I gave in after a lot of mediocre movies and too thick too fast) I at least got back what I paid for them. The worst are the slipcases that have exactly the same design on them as the BD cover itself, it's literally another piece of packaging to get through before you can watch your movie.

I liked the LOTR bookends though, they had a practical use.

I do know what you mean when the images on the Slips are identical to the Case Cover Art...but they do look great when they are embossed and shiny

I don't think I've ever had a slip case which isn't identical to the cover art. I may be wrong but it's too late to check.
