Kung Fu Panda 2 3D is a favorite CGI animated movie of mine. Highly recommended, and great 3D. Not quite Open Season 3D, but great nonetheless. Fun movie too.
I think I may plunk down the money to get part I in 3D, as I only have the DVD 2D of part I. |

Yes, don't forget Kung Fu Panda as well. They did a great job in post converting it to 3d, and I think its the better movie as well.

It was great, but KFP2 also was a lot of fun. Gary Olman as the Peacock made for a great villain. EDIT: Kung Fu Panda 1 3D was 29.99 in store "Best" Buy. I had to pass. Surprisingly, most other Dreamworks were on sale for 20 bucks, along with a bunch of others. Last edited by Zivouhr; 07-15-2012 at 11:47 PM. |

Not really. Re-rendering is not creating its second eye image from a 2D image. It is creating that image from polygons and animation data. Re-rendering would offer the same as native 3D. So, the version we saw years ago, would be the version if we purchased a ticket for 2D, and the re-rendered version would be the version if we purchased a ticket for 3D ( that was native 3D ).
Conversions like Shrek series, is just making a best guess of what the second eye would look like. Exactly the same as live action 2D conversion. 2D images of CG animation is created in 3D space, but 2D live action shots were also shot in a three dimensional sets. So it's the same 2D to 3D. Re-rendering methods to live actions would be more akin to digging up parallel universe where the actors, lights, camera were still on the sets, on location, and the filmmakers went in and placed another offset camera, or replaced the camera with 3D setup, to get native 3D. You might still hear re-rendering being mentioned as a conversion, not due to process of adding depth, but the process of optimizing lighting, aperture, etc, for 3D, and tweaking framing, animation, etc, for 3D. |

Not sure if this is answers any questions:
Computer Animation Native 3D refers to a virtual stereo 3D camera rig (usually parallel camera rig) in a three dimensional world when using the original file assets and linking a dual virtual camera to the original camera. Some companies might not have access to the original files for some reason, and in those cases, or if there were too many composite layers in each shot to make re-rendering impractical time-wise, they'd probably elect for a 2D to 3D conversion of the original 2D movie. I heard Shrek 1 and 2 might have been converted, but I haven't seen them in 3D yet, not a huge Shrek fan. |

Cool. A kung fu bear in real life.
Yes, finally got Kung Fu Panda 1 3D (only had the DVD before), and the 3D was just as great as in KFP2 3D to my relief. Both are great movies IMO, Jack Black great as Po. The villains in each were top of the line and formidable. |
