NEW YORK – March 30, 2012 – Production begins this week in Toronto on the second season of Syfy’s super-powered original drama series Alphas starring David Strathairn, Malik Yoba, Warren Christie, Azita Ghanizada, Ryan Cartwright and Laura Mennell.



Joining the cast this season is Erin Way (Detroit 187, Private Practice) as “Kat” the newest addition to the team of quirky superhuman investigators. Alphas is produced by Universal Cable Productions and BermanBraun Television. The season will consist of 13 episodes and is slated to premiere on Syfy in July 2012.

Alphas follows a clandestine group of ordinary people whose unique neurological condition equips them with extraordinary mental and physical abilities. Led by preeminent neurologist and psychiatrist Dr. Lee Rosen (Emmy Award-winner and Academy Award-nominee David Strathairn) this unlikely team takes on cases the CIA, FBI and Pentagon are unwilling or unable to solve and go head-to-head with many of the criminal Alphas released from the Binghamton facility in last season’s finale episode. When the series debuted last summer, it became Syfy’s most-watched original scripted series premiere in two years. Overall the show averaged 3.3 million total viewers during its first season.

Erin Way joins the ensemble as “Kat,” a mysterious, free-spirited young loner whose Alpha ability allows her to pick up any skill at a glance. The downside to her condition, which has plagued her for her entire life, is that her memories are short-lived and her experiences fade away after a short amount of time. Becoming a member of the team provides a purpose and direction for Kat and working with Dr. Rosen may help her reclaim her lost past.

Way became familiar to television audiences playing the offbeat “Wendy Chapin-Lowmeister” on the ABC drama Detroit 187. Her previous television credits include Hawaii Five-0, Private Practice and Girlfriends. In film, she has worked with directors Joe Dante, Ron Howard, Bryce Dallas-Howard and Mark Ruffalo and can be seen this summer in the features The Collection, Not That Funny and Donnby.

Erin Way is represented by Gloria Hinojosa at Amsel, Eisenstadt and Frazier and managed by Kay Liberman of Liberman-Zerman Management.

Bruce Miller (Eureka) joins Alphas this season as Executive Producer and Showrunner. Executive Producers are Gail Berman, Lloyd Braun and Gene Stein for BermanBraun and Zak Penn. The series was created by Zak Penn and Michael Karnow.

ALPHAS (SEASON 2 PREMIERE)
Premieres Monday, July 23 at 10PM

In Syfy’s action-packed hit drama series, an unlikely team of ordinary people with superhuman physical and mental abilities – known as Alphas – takes on mysterious cases the CIA, FBI and Pentagon are unable to solve and go head-to-head with criminal Alphas.

Season 2 picks up eight months after last year’s finale with the stage set for an explosive turn of events at the Binghamton facility (the Guantanamo of the Alpha world) that could have devastating, far-reaching consequences. Dr. Lee Rosen (Emmy Award-winner and Academy Award-nominee David Strathairn), having exposed the existence of Alphas to the unsuspecting public, finds himself discredited and imprisoned by a government desperate to cover up his revelation. The rest of the core team has disbanded and some, without Rosen’s guidance and care, have regressed to their old, destructive ways. They must now battle their individual demons in order to reunite and try to save their own.

Alphas also stars Malik Yoba, Warren Christie, Azita Ghanizada, Ryan Cartwright and Laura Mennell. 'Alphas' scoop: What's new in season 2 -- EXCLUSIVE

For its second season, Syfy’s Alphas has a new showrunner (Eureka‘s Bruce Miller), a new hero (played by Detroit 1-8-7‘s Erin Way) and a new creative direction (the world now knows about the existence of people with superpowers). We recently spoke to Miller, who’s stepping in for previous showrunner Ira Steven Behr this season (and btw, Alphas co-creator Zak Penn is expected to consult on the show, but not write any episodes this round — the man has the upcoming Karate Kid sequel and story credit on The Avengers, after all, so we suspect he’s busy). Below, Miller gives some fresh details about what’s to come; the show returns Monday, July 23:

EntertainmentWeekly: The Alphas went public in the first season finale. How does this change the game?
Miller: The show exists very much in the real world so we tried to think what would really happen. We decided that some people would believe it and some would not. The goverment wouldn’t confirm it. Alphas would be somewhere between Area 51 and Bigfoot. And certainly Dr. Lee Rosen (David Strathairn) the hammer would come down on him for making that kind of revelation. I think he was trying to do the right thing. But the repercussions were quite strong. Rosen has been institutionalized and discredited. The team has broken up. It’s a team of misfits but they fit well together. I wanted to see their lives without the team. Some have become more much committed to each other, some have fallen quite far morally and ethically.

What’s their relationship with the government like now?
The government finds they’re in a position where they don’t particularly trust Rosen and he doesn’t trust them. But this team has special skills and there are some very scary Alphas escaping into the world. They the team is brought together, not because the government wants them but because the government needs them.

What’s Erin Way’s character like?
She really is fabulous we feel she’s a terrific actress and we’re lucky to have her. Erin’s character is named Kat and she shows up [in an] episode where there’s an Alphas Fight Club and she’s going to toe with Harken (Malik Yoba). Her character has an amazing ability — she’s a quick study, she can learn anything really quickly. She can learn how to fly a helicopter overnight. But it comes with an extraordinary downside, that she has no long-term memory. Things that happened six weeks ago fades away. She’s almost like a Tivo moving forward. But her muscle memory doesn’t go away. So she doesn’t know what she knows and what she doesn’t know. Sometimes she’s incredibly useful sometime she’s not and you never know which it’s going to be. She’s living in the moment. It’s a very cool character.

You’re stepping into the showrunner seat this season. What might we expect different in terms of focus or tone or whatnot?
Season 1 is always an experiment in a show finding its way. I was a huge fan of the show last year. I think you want to take that and move it ahead and have characters grow and change. I think we’ve just scratched the surface and I really want to see what these characters are like, get to know them more intimately, their strengths and weaknesses and good side sand bad sides — so you’re rooting for them even more to overcome their bad sides.

What else is coming in season 2?
We are definitely going to see Stan Parrish (John Pyper-Ferguson) again. We’ve got some great guest stars like Lauren Holly and C. Thomas Howell. We’re doing things you’re not going to see on any other show, like we have an episode that takes place in the Civil War. This season is fully packed.

It wasn't serious enough. It's okay to have comedy or comic relief, but this and a lot of other shows feel campy.

I think this is just the SyFy model. Nearly all their shows have a lighter nature by design. Hopefully Defiance doesnt get caught up in this. I think defiance needs a more serious tone more like BSG.

I thought it had potential with the way they took the powers. but literally the script writers need to be shot. Every line was straight out of X-men and Heroes. the end episode had me in stitches because the villain was pretty much a straight up magneto clone. the war brewing, the megalomaniac speech etc.
