Is anyone else actually reading this over there?! It's riveting! RAH has posts spread over the last several pages detailing his efforts to reconstruct the 2:22 version and how he went through tens of thousands of 65mm cuts to recover lost footage before essentially being roped in to bringing in David Lean himself after being told not too.

What a link! Thanks. This definitely sheds light on the hold up. Exciting stuff unfolding over there!

It also seems to be drawing in a lot of film pros with wonderful sidebar anecdotes of their own. If you love this film, it's a must read.

That's strange when I did a search on that exact title I got two hits and on both amazon.co.uk had a link "sign up to be notified...." and no way to pre-order so your date does seem a bit of a gamble, I mean if amazon knows when they get stock in (how cant they give you a date without knowing that) why have they not enabled pre-order or published the availability date yet?

PS: I live in Norway, can the reason be so straightforward as the Norwegian release date not being set yet, and amazon not being allowed to let Norwegian costumers pre-order before that date is set?

The Alamo has been depicted in films numerous times. I find it absolutely heartbreaking the studios will not pony up the funds neccessary for Mr. Harris to save the 1960 film by John Wayne, nor will allow the rest of us to donate to the cause (I can only assume for legal reasons, the worst fear in me thinks it is for political reasons).

As someone says at the end of Kwai...

Madness. Madness.

Very happy for Mr. Harris that his landmark restorative effort, Lawrence of Arabia, will soon be coming to the format it was probably born for in certain ways.

Now, if we could only get our keyboards clicking and find some way to bridge the divide, pressure a mediation, and allow Mr. Harris to save another film that has become a concern for him...1960's The Alamo.

EDIT

If it will help motivate a restoration of The Alamo, I'll buy ten copies each of Lawrence, Vertigo, My Fair Lady, Rear Window, and The Godfather.
I also want "The Alamo."
The Alamo, Amistad, The Best Years of Our Lives, Black Rain (Jp), The Enemy Below, Far from the Madding Crowd, From Here to Eternity, Gray Lady Down, The Incredible Shrinking Man, Interrupted Melody, Khartoum, Lust for Life, Mississippi Burning, Moby Dick (Gregory Peck), The Other Sister, The Right Stuff, Ryan's Daughter, Searching for Bobby Fischer, Sink the Bismarck, Swing Kids, Testament, Them, The Thing from Another World, War of the Worlds (Orig.) & When Worlds Collide

Hey now, you know political discussions are frowned upon in this forum!

In all seriousness...I don't know if I can recall reading about any one movie that went through all the painstaking work of restoration as LoA. There were some great articles about Ten Commandments & Ben-Hur, but IMO, the scope of work doesn't seem to match what went on here.
RAH is always a treat to read. I'm quite confident he had forgotten more about films than I'll ever know!
Looking forward to this coming week, if it can be trusted that LoA will be announced!

These posts by Harris are absolutely fascinating. I do hope they include this as a video extra of some kind.

In that thread someone suggests an official announcement will be made by Sony this week (Amazon UK now has it listed at 11.20GBP for the single disc version release on 10th Sept). Order placed!

I don't think it will be a digibook, but more like the Ben-Hur/Ten Commandments UCE's...at least when the picture was floating around a month ago that's what it looked like.
I'm happy with either of those choices.

Linky to the listing here for the Amazon UK Blu-ray.

Although it does say "Artwork TBD", they do appear to using the artwork that was posted here some time ago (and lost in the server crash). And it includes an Ultraviolet digital copy - yea! I can watch Lawrence of Arabia on my cell phone while riding the bus to work!

I am still holding out hope that Sony goes with the "tried & true" coverart from the existing SE dvd release, as I'm not a big fan of this art. Obviously, not a deal breaker for me though!

That would be funny if UV copies were somehow limited to cell phones. I guess you didn't know they can be redeemed on VUDU through a PS3 (or PC), meaning you can watch it on your TV, and possibly even in full 1080P HD.

Yes, I knew there were many other options to watch an UV copy and still don't care. I buy Blu-rays to watch the Blu-ray, not some silly digital copy. Why would I want to watch a standard def copy, 'possibly even in full 1080 HD', when I can watch the Blu-ray with lossless audio and high bitrate video? I get that some folks have a use for UV, I don't. And I bet most folks watch UV on a much smaller device than their TV, smartphones or tablets. Watching a film like Lawrence of Arabia on something like that ought to be just cause to revoke one's status as a film enthusiast.

Ordered the U.K. for just under $20 shipped! Sept 10th is a lot closer than Nov or whenever we get the U.S. announcement. I'm pretty sure it's a 2 BD release. One for film and one for special features.
