It's funny, I was googlng whether people had a preference between the two and I found some posts of yours from another site

I'm not ashamed to admit it - my own preference for DTS is a holdover from the DVD days. It may not make a difference now - but, instinctively, I still want to see my surround receiver say "DTS".

I think it's also comforting when it says "MA-Master".

Hey guys,

I agree there's most likely a zero chance of new transfers, but this video encode talk has me intrigued.

How would you explain the essential difference between VC-1 and AVC?

How might AVC improve the current Blade runner transfer?

Is there any history of video encodes being redone on re-releases of the same transfer?

Thanks.

Well LPCM is still the way to go but DTS and Dolby have to make money with BD somehow, right?

The point is, why would LPCM/DTS-HD/TrueHD be the way to go over one another if they all sound the exact same (and LPCM wastes alot of space which could be better used for the video portion or extras)?

For those whom wanted the box set released in 2007, there is an ebay listing for a 5-disc Region 4 (Australia & New Zealand) version (plus three criterion releases, and various other films) for $85 on eBay.

Thanks.
But ugggghhh..
All I want is some 1-disc set. Just the movie. I wish there was a version like that for $17.99. Not a $1.00 more.

Hmmm ... according to the side of the box, that looks to be a DVD set, not bluray.

If you're just interested in the final cut you could import this edition:

I see your point, but there's also the point of compatibility. Many consumers that had surround systems in 2006-2007 already had a way to listen to LPCM, but hardly any of the receivers or players available could decode DTS-HD MA (a few could decode Dolby TrueHD) so many people had to go out and re-buy receivers or players just because Dolby and DTS wanted to get their cut. Of course I could make the same argument for the rushed home 3D format, but it has already failed unlike DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD.

You're welcome.

The 3-disc set is so close to what I've hoped for: All the content on just 3 Blu-ray discs, in a nice and neat Amaray case.

If only it came in the Amaray included with the large set. I have no need for the digi-book. If I wanted a book on Blade Runner, I'd buy one. Frustratingly, I'm sure Warner will re-release the 3-disc set in that very Amaray, after milking the digi-book sales.

But it looks like if you buy the gift set you do get an Amaray case.

I'm not a fan of Digibooks either but in this case that edition is of no consequence to me. If they're new encodes with lossless on all versions I'd be willing to pay for the gift set, if it's not I'm not double-dipping at all.

I hear ya, but I hate DVDs. They scratch very easily and crack around the hub.

Blu-rays are far more resilient, so having a 3 Blu-ray / 2 DVD set modified to a 3 Blu-ray set is enough for me to bite. However, I'll wait for the eventual Amaray re-release.

Frustrating that there hasnt been a decent release for this film in the UK.

I got the UK one years ago but I think I'm definately picking up the 3 disc set.

Ive got the UK DVD tin (love this set!) and the Spanish briefcase (exactly the same as the US one except that the little booklet is obviously in Spanish - its the same as the one in the DVD tin anyway so that doesnt matter to me). Discs are the same as the US set. Incidentally, amazon.es are still doing the briefcase rather cheap last time I looked (40 euros?) if you want it.

I was thinking about the 3-disc digibook but theres something about that cover I dont like for some reason. And I dont like the fact that the book is half the size of the one in the gift set either. Even though Im trying to persuade myself I dont need any of them (and I dont!) I think I might get the gift set at some point!
