Musicguy: I love everything on your list, I would buy ALL of them. One important addition (for me anyway) is The Pirates of Penzance, oh how I would love to have that in HD with lossless (all that beautifully left-right panned singing and wonderful recording). The recently(finally) released DVD sounds so good I can't imagine how great it would be without compression and with a HD picture.

Then of course is a very guilty pleasure of mine,

Can't Stop the Music.

Other 70's and 80's titles-

Yentl,
Grease 2 (I actually love the opening number),
Pennies from Heaven,
The Apple (1980, a rarity, cultish musical but in a weird way I liked it), Headin' for Broadway (great film from Fox with Rex Smith),
The Slipper and the Rose
The Little Prince
Lost Horizon (I believe Twilight Time may be releasing this year)
Godspell

Honestly don't know what the studios have against musicals. Maybe they don't sell? (though every high school does them) Maybe the rights are too expensive?

I looked through the thread but didn't see anything, is there any word of a proper release of Once in the US? I am going to snag the existing version, but I know without a proper player, I can't get the extras, even though I did watch them previously. I'd rather not have MULTIPLE copies.

And hedwig needs to get its butt in gear and release. Though seeing it live in Chicago tops ANYTHING, I mean ANYTHING I'd seen before. Words cannot describe how moving it was. Sigh.

the retinkering of this from the stage version to the film version is just grating to me.

I am not sure how they sell, sadly I would say probably not on the studio's priority list. But more and more homes are becoming equipped with Blu-ray players, and that includes a 22% rise in the adult demographic (over 35), and that is great news for us, because there is the main audience.

By the way, another release (wow, we can hold a party LOL). Lost Horizon, the Ross Hunter film is being released in early December from Twilight Time. The film has undergone a restoration and was released as a Warner Archive release not too long ago. Personally, I don't find the film as bad as some call it, I rather enjoyed it. I am excited for it. Thanks Twilight Time for Bye Bye Birdie and Lost Horizon! Who knows, maybe we might get Oliver and Funny Girl from Twilight Time, though with the release of Annie, those two may be released by Sony, you know, the company that helped create the format that releases very few of their catalog titles to support it.

I just happened to notice Warner are celebrating their 90th Anniversary in 2013. I know it's futile to think they may set to work buying back the rights from Paramount/CBS and give us a first class restoration using 65mm elements of George Cukor's My Fair Lady. Only in a perfect world. Robert A Harris claims (with much support) that last year's blu-ray release was the worst quality release of 2011. Perhaps 2014 - it's 50th Anniversary?

Great news indeed! Now we just need the other musicals out like Oklahoma. I saw that there was once a box set coming out in the UK with a ton of musicals, including two that are already out, but it seems to have dropped off the map.

Hehe, yeah I did a little jump for joy in my chair when I read that. The movie will be great on Blu-ray with its colors, cinematography, and that fantastic soundtrack, of which the orchestra was beautifully recorded! I just wish it was sooner. Looking forward to Lost Horizon as well, and watching Bye Bye Birdie tonight. I have the feeling that the catalog titles will start rolling out now, as an atricle in Home Media Retailing with interviews from some of the studios claim that there is a 38% increase each quarter in catalog titles. They said the sweet spot that people will replace their DVD's seems to be 9.99, but many of these titles require work which costs $$$. As for me, I am willing to pay for good transfers.

Sounds good, Rob. You may get your Hello, Dolly! (1969) before I get my Paint Your Wagon (1969). Yes, we've reached that age group that seeks out catalog titles and already knows the benefit of doing so. Take care.

Personally, I would love to see Where's Charley? in Blu-Ray or DVD. I understand the widow Loesser doesn't like it and won't let it be released...

I also find it criminal that none of Fred Astaire's dancing films have made it to Blu-Ray. Garland has three, Kelly has three... hell, even Crosby has two now... all we have for Astaire are the That's Entertainment package and some non-dancing films...

I might have already posted in this thread, but I'm looking forward to seeing Xanadu on Blu-ray.
