I rented Sammy's Adventures on Vudu last night, and enjoyed the movie. Consistent with their other 3D films, Ben Stassen and nWave pictures have loaded it with uber-strong parallax and extreme pop-outs. Sammy really is a unique experience that Hollywood would never be bold enough to attempt.
At times, the story was boring and repetitive, but overall, it was entertaining enough to keep my attention. The short 88 min. runtime feels about right. Just when I would start to drift off, an extreme 3D moment would capture my attention. The environmental message is a little contrived but easily forgivable, considering its target juvenile audience. The biggest surprise was Sammy's impressive licensed soundtrack, which for an indie film, features surprisingly recognizable talent, including Michael Jackson and Bruno Mars. But of course, the real star is the 3D. Convergence is set at a record high for nearly every scene, so foreground objects are always sitting in negative theater space. I actually had to move my couch closer to my TV so the screen would fill my field of vision more, making the window violations tolerable. Other than minor eyestrain complaints, the "theme park" 3D was awesome. There were at least five instances where I giggled like a little kid and successfully poked something in the foreground or kicked Sammy in the face. I could have easily tripled that number if I wanted. Every moment is sculpted for fun 3D. Considering the novelty that this film presents, extreme 3D in a feature-length film, all fans of pop-out and strong parallax should check this one out. It really is a 3D adventure. Movie - 2.5/5 Stereography - 5/5 Depth - 5/5 Pop-out - 5/5 Dimensionality - 5/5

No he didn't...I just made it up actually. Seriously though, the 3D looks great in this and I wish all 3D was as good. Whether or not you like the movie is another matter though. Personally, I think nWave have a done a great job with this one, especially considering that they are an Independent Company. They've shown Hollywood how to do 3D properly. Gae |

Another thing I noticed was major similarities between Sammy's Adventures and one of nWave's earlier IMAX movies, S.O.S. Planet. They share the exact same message, similar animation, and similar pop-out moments.

I think the Sensio SBS 3D DVD would be considered S.O.S. Planet's best quality release. I've only seen an abbreviated, narration-less version on YouTube, which was removed soon after it was posted.

I've got the S.O.S. Planet Field sequential DVD if anyone wants to buy it or trade something for it. I put it on eBay a few months ago but had a no-sale.

Hilarious, guys! I was just saying that in my area we do not have the Cox cable network, thus, no 3D channels except for the current NBC Olympics.
Sammy's Adventure in 3D on the Cox cable FREE for customers is a great option for those who have not purchased the Region A 3D BD from Asia. The popouts on the 3D BD are the best I've seen. Cox popouts might not be as visually thrilling. Is it broadcast in 720p or 1080p? |
