Uh, PG-13 movies tend to make a lot more money than R-rated ones. You and I might not like it, but it's true. If the budget crawls past $100 million, the film will be rated PG-13, mark my words.

I'd agree that the chances of the movie being R-rated are pretty slim if the budget gets any higher than $100m, though. Hell, even at $100m it's doubtful. I simply don't understand why they need such a large budget. A Mad Max film shouldn't need to be more than $50m, IMO. |

Movies (or sequels) that take 10-15+ years to get off the ground don't usually fare well (Indy 4, T3, Carrie 2, Basic Instinct 2, etc). OTOH, the producers of FURY ROAD took their sweet time to make the film, whereas most studio pictures wrap in 6 weeks, so this is a good sign. But, there's the reportedly huge budget - another bad sign. I agree that these movies can be done on much smaller budgets if you've got a creative team but all this money tells me there will be plenty of groan-inducing CGI and fancy camerawork. One thing I loved about Road Warrior (not so much the first or 3rd films) was the simplicity of the execution. It was all about the awesome stuntwork and editing (pre-MTV but strangely appropriate for this film), very little dialogue and great location shooting and backdrops. I just hope Mad Max 4 doesn't turn into Death Race 5.

This doesn't star the same guy, and it isn't a sequel. It's a remake. Or rather a reboot. And those largely do just fine.

Sequel, remake, reboot, different actors, it doesn't matter. The point was, it took them more than 25 years to make another Mad Max film. Historically, this is a sign that there was some trouble getting the project off the ground: people disagreeing with the storyline, actors coming on board and then leaving, false starts, budget disputes, you name it. The end result is usually a product that's been compromised in some way.
And no, reboots don't "largely do just fine". They largely suck. |

The whole 25 year thing is an exaggeration on IGN part, they probably had probs back in the day with a sequel, and this is an entirely different film from it. My Letterboxd Account http://letterboxd.com/foggy/ Come and give your support to the people at BDTV Forum!!!
