Hi all,
So I went ahead and upgraded to a new HDTV, though it is not my first personal HDTV my first tv was a 19 inch 720p sanyo which is still a great tv dont get me wrong but is too small for active blu ray viewing and dvds occassionally which is mainly what I was using it for. I will keep it to either use as a secondary monitor for my laptop or use at home or in my dorm(whichever one I want to move to school depending on what could be stolen at first gonna make sure my room is secure). Anyway i'm worried because that is all I do is watch active blu rays and play my wii which is in 480p anyway so it doesn't matter about a HDTV resolution for that. For my screen size was 720p a good choice? Im talking about this model http://www.sears.com/samsung-32inch-...G1#reviewsWrap which I bought in store for 320$ as listed. Other retailers carry the 1080p model but it was 450$. So basically the upgrade to 1080p was alot more money. Based on price and other factors did I make a good choice? Even though 720p isn't blu ray resolution am I still getting the full benefit of blu ray? I figured if I wanted a 32 inch tv 450$ wasn't worth it when i could buy a good 40 or 42 inch for that price which would be too big for a bedroom or dorm. I just hoped I got a nice tv to last through college or for 5 years or so. Thanks for the opinions. I watched Commando on it fso far which wasn't the greatest quality compared to other BD i've watched but I know it may not be as good as my parents 40inch Sony Bravia 120hz 1080p im used to. |

Blu-ray is 1080p, as you know, but the truth is, at a screen size of 32", you won't see much of a difference between 720p and 1080p, if one at all. So, it's definitely not worth it to pay over $100 for a difference you're not likely to see. You don't have to worry about 720p vs. 1080p until you get around 40" or bigger. Even then, the aspect of how close you sit to your screen play a role in if you will see a significant difference or not.

I bought a 720 32' Samsung as my first HDTV and blu's looked nice and were a definite improvement over dvd's, but I didn't fall in love with blu's until I got a 51' 1080. there is no reason why you can't enjoy your 32' for a few years but I'd say you may want to plan for a bigger screen and the 1080 for your next display.

Thank you guys for the opinions. I've done a lot of digging and this TV is one of the most recommended tv's in a 32 inch for the price. I think I did well. I thought about my concern with the blu ray playback. I did some testing and actually blu's look pretty solid on it and even though I care alot about blu ray it wasn't worth paying 500 bucks for a 32 inch with 1080p resolution. This tv will work for what I want it for a good personal tv for college and my bedroom. Later on I can get a good 1080p tv with a bigger screen size as it seems your not going to maximize blu ray at a 32 inch size anyway.

What ever personal perspective positive or negative you want to mull over. Don't beat yourself up over it, the TV will last 5+years if looked after.
To be fair many of my friends couldn't notice the difference from 720P > 1080p on a 37" until it was pointed out, then it was obvious the upscale in quality and definition such as skin tones. There's a whole swathe of people using 1080p kit not even receiving 720p signals. |
