Oppo is right about this problem...the studios need to conform to standards. It is not Oppo's job to fix other people's problems. The studios do a poor job of adhering to BR standards.

Write to the studio and tell them you want a disc that works or you want your money back. And good luck with that because they could give a damn about the consumer.

The Blu-ray disc plays, it’s just that the ratio issue and image are shifted off to the left on the screen when watching the featurettes. I am not trying to complain about the minor issue in the last post, the only reason I posted the information is to let other people know. I am not going to spend anymore time regarding this issue. The Blu-ray format is very complicated. While I had problems with some DVD players back around the year 2000 not playing 1 or 2 DVD titles correctly out of a 100, the Blu-ray format has many more issues when playing back discs, especially discs that contain a lot of complicated interactive features.

I was in no way blaming OPPO Digital Inc for the problem since they isolated it to a studio problem. I trust what they said in the email. What was confusing is that the disc plays fine on other Blu-ray players on the market including the OPPO BDP-83.

Hello,

A newbie here.

I have the Oppo 95 which has the region free chip installed.
I'm not sure which chip it is but I need to press "dimmerX3, muteX1 then region 1,2 or 3 to switch for BDs.

Does anyone know if the latest Aug upgrade messes up my region free abilities?

Hi there. The new firmware upgrade does NOT affect that type of region free chip. You're good to go!

The old OPPO BDP-93/95 Blu-ray players most likely will not be getting any new streaming services or major improvements to the existing VUDU or Netflix interface with firmware updates since there is a lack of interest in doing so. So for VUDU streaming OPPO BDP-93/95 owners will be limited to 2-D 1080P 60Hz with 5.1 Dolby Digital Plus surround sound. The new OPPO BDP-103/105 Blu-ray players offers a new VUDU interface that supports VUDU 3-D with 7.1 Dolby Digital Plus. Also the old OPPO BDP-93/95 as I have mentioned before will only support Netflix at 720P with 2.0 Dolby stereo. The new OPPO BDP-103/105 offers Netflix at 1080P with 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound.

Personally I think it’s bad for consumers to have to upgrade their Blu-ray player if they want better picture and sound quality with the new VUDU and Netflix interfaces. 3-D streaming Blu-ray players from OPPO, Sony, and Panasonic that were manufactured in 2010 and 2011 could receive a firmware update to offer features found on the 2012 Blu-ray players if programmers would just spend the time writing software for the old Blu-ray players and smart HDTV’s on the market. Instead of a firmware update a hardware upgrade is required, but it should not be that way when the existing hardware is capable already to offer high bit rate 3-D 1080P with 7.1 lossless audio.

QUOTE FROM OPPO DIGITAL INC

No. Vudu has not been allowing us to update the current players to the API which supports 3D, and it is unlikely that this will change.”

ah well, I do no streaming through my 93, so this won't bother me in the least. I have my HTPC to use for any streaming media - IF I really need to do such a thing I vehemently oppose...

OK guys, strange problem here. When watching movies with temporary subtitles lately, such as Avengers when Black Widow is speaking Russian at the beginning, the subtitles for the other language don't display. I noticed this on Xmen first class as well when Kevin Bacon is speaking german early on.

Is this part of the subtitle problem that is known about? Thanks!

You need to get the latest firmware version to fix this issue.

Resolved an issue where subtitles on some Blu-ray discs would fail to display. Customers reported that after loading the disc and selecting a subtitle language in the Top Menu, the subtitle would not show automatically when movie playback started. It was required that the customer toggled the subtitle on/off or switched subtitle languages to enable subtitle output. Sample titles include "Kong Fu Panda 1/2 (BD, 2008/2011)", "A Seperation (BD, 2012)", "Being Flynn (BD, 2012)" and "The World God Only Knows (BD, 2012)". This issue has been resolved.

Bill McClain now has his unofficial BDP-103 FAQ up and goes into a lot more detail about the differences.

see How is the BDP-103 different from the BDP-93?

Note the use of SLC memory now.

I noticed at the beginning of The Avengers last night too. When Scarlett Johanson (Romanov) was speaking Russian to the Russian mod guys, there were no subtitles. Usually, the Oppo lets me know when there is a new firmware. I guess I need to do a manual update.

Very little chance of unknown issues. At this point minor fixes for identified issues that user's reports, and sometimes a additional feature/ability added as a trial.

I have the dk pro mod but haven't upgraded to latest fw because of the need to upgrade the chip fw also. What are the chances the next official fw do so I don't have to upgrade the mod?

This seems to be the biggest upgrade for me with 103: New container combinations: FLAC in MKV (is that 5.1?), DTS-HD Master in MKV. How will cinavia affect this. Was some posts about 103/105 not gonna be the same good network/dnla mediaplayer because of cinavia?
