For a strictly 2 channel system, I would go with the mono's.

of course, almost everyone is going to tell you not to bi-wire and all of the usuall lines that go with it. i say, it's your stuff, your money, do what you want to do with it as long as it's safe for your ears and safe for your gear.

I am pretty sure both options would have enough power to drive these speakers. The price is pretty much the same but would there be a benefit of having one over the other?

Any XPR amp would be to say the least BAD ASS but cost wise the XPA is a fine choice also.

The XPA-1 amps will do just fine with 500w@8Ω / 1000w@4Ω , The B&W 800D has a nominal impedance of 8Ω and minimum 3.1Ω . The XPA-1 should not have problems with the ohm dips. I have heard over on the EMO board that it can handle intermittent 2Ω loads just fine. I do not believe you will be disappointed with the XPA-1.

Never had the UMC, I bought the upgrade card on it's own from another forum member.

the monoblocks offer complete isolation, no crosstalk between channels. the power draw of one channel has absolutely no effect on the other channel with monoblocks.

while there is nothing wrong with using the XPA-5 like you mentioned, but, if given the chance and if the money is available (space & a couple of strong backs to hump those fat asses around) then I still say go with the monoblocks.

i know there is mention of supposed power issues, but, unless your blasting your source you should be fine with the XPA-1's.

I am looking at getting some emotiva amps and I can't decide if getting 3 XPA-1's for my paradigm studio 100's and CC690 is over kill. I was also thinking about getting a XPA-2 and a XPA-1 combo

Studio 100s are relatively efficient at 8 ohms @ 93 db/watt sensitivity. In other words, it doesn't take that much power to make them play LOUD. So unless these speakers are meant to fill a commercial theater, the XPA-1 will probably be overkill for the studio 100s of cc690s. Hell, even the XPA-2 will be over kill.

If I were to choose in the Emotiva world of amps for your speakers, I would get three XPA-100s or an XPA-2 and an XPA-100 (center).

FWIW, my friend has the Studio 100/CC690 combo. Don't know which version, but bought them years ago. Anyway, when he was looking for amps about 8 months ago, he looked at Emotiva but was concerned at the high gain (32db) of their offerings paired with relatively efficient amps (though I don't think 93 db/watt is THAT efficient). Anyway, he went with Outlaw's 2200 mono blocks b/c of their lower gain (27db). His HT room is a good size (maybe 15x25x9), and those amps have no trouble getting those speakers to painful levels. At normal levels, he loves those amps. Also, you can buy THREE 2200s for $999 shipped.
