Until Sony develops a firmware update work-around to apparent hardware limitations, there is no lossless audio for 3D Blu-rays that have Dolby TrueHD audio. There is also no 7.1 audio on any 3D Blu-ray with Dolby TrueHD audio. Regardless of the output being Bitstream (native) or LPCM (converted), any 7.1 Dolby TrueHD audio on any 3D blu-ray disc will only be heard as lossy 5.1 Dolby Digital using a Playstation 3 console. It can however decode DTS-Master 7.1 audio on 3D Blu-rays (this is assuming you are using a PS3 (slim) – the PS3 (fat) is unable to decode any lossless audio on 3D Blu-rays…Dolby TrueHD or DTS Master audio on the PS3 (fat) will only be output as lossy dolby digital 5.1 and lossy DTS 5.1 audio.

As other's have said, no and Sony has yet to announce a firmware update to include it (granted you own the slimmed down model and not the original fat model), and at this point, I wouldn't hold my breath for them to do so (even though I would be pleased if they do, but I'm planning to pick up a Oppo anyway).
Nothing is true, everything is permitted.

Looks like the PS3 (slim) "could" if Sony would develope and release a firmware update. I wrote Dolby to get their take on the problem and this is what they said:
Hi .....- Thank you for your email. The Sony PlayStation 3 was one of the first Blu-ray players to offer lossless Dolby TrueHD playback for Blu-ray content. As you have noted, the Sony PS3 does not support Dolby TrueHD audio for playback on 3D titles. This is not an issue on Sony’s other Blu-ray players. Dolby has encouraged Sony to do a firmware update to enable TrueHD functionality on 3D titles. If you have any additional questions we recommend contacting Sony. Best- The Dolby Game Team People need to keep contacting Sony and let them know they want the PS3 to be able to play back Dolby TrueHD audio on 3D blurays. |

Terribly sorry to revive an old thread, but does anyone know if the Fat PS3 (40GB) will play lossless audio with a 3D movie yet? I heard it would do it, but then I saw someone say that was just with the slim. Last post in this thread is a couple of months old. Is it true that it's just with the slim?

Thanks! Very good to know. Now if only Sony would get the Dolby True HD working with 3D, this would be perfect!
