Long time no see all. It's been a while since I've visited this thread, probably since I sold my UMC-1/XPA-5 combo.
Looking for a little advice. Searching online, I have discovered that my Marantz SR6006 puts out 75.4wpc with 5 channels used. I am considering the UPA-500 which puts out 80wpc. I don't need, or have the room for an XPA-5, and my Focal Chorus speakers have a 91.5db sensitivity. Is it even worth spending the money for the extra 5wpc?

What are you going to test them on, your KEF 205/2 or the DIY 205/2?

I will hook them up to the DIY Speakers. It's just to much trouble to connect them to the original KEF.

On another note, I had a UMC/LPA-1 in my 2nd setup for close to a year before I replaced it with an SR6005 (6006 predecessor), and while I preferred the UMC/LPA with music, I was perfectly happy running the SR6005 solo for 18 months before the upgrade bug hit and I sold it. And actually, I preferred the SR6005 solo with movies over the UMC/LPA simply because of Audyssey Dynamic EQ. But if you can't shake off the feeling of only getting 75.4 WPC all-channels-driven, then the only way you'll be able to answer the question is to take advantage of the 30-day return policy and try out the UPA-500. Of course you'll lose the cost of return shipping if you decide to return it, but I think that's a fair price for an in-home trial.

for the folks who own XDA-1 DAC's, do any of you leave them powered on all the time and if so, how long has it been on and have you had any problems leaving it in an on condition?
thanks in advance for everyone who responds to this post.

I never had it on longer then about 5 hours. So far I did not have any problems. I had everything apart for the past 2 days to get my XPA-1's installed. Hooked it all back up and it works like a charm.

I don't normally leave mine powered on, but I did have it on for a whole day and then left it on over night a few times and haven't had any issues.

I have the older SR6003 and it's been plenty sufficient for my needs. Obviously, if I am pushing it to the limits, an amp definitely gives my system the headroom it needs but at my typical listening levels and in my small/medium family room the receiver is plenty. If I had a bigger room then I would need an amp, so I would say it comes down to your room size and listening levels.
