Nintendo letting devs set Wii U eShop prices, no payments for patches

In the past, Nintendo has had quite a bit of control over the pricing of indie titles on its digital stores. With Wii U, the situation has changed significantly.

Frozenbyte marketing manager Mikael Haveri says developers can choose their own pricing when it comes to indie games on the Wii U eShop:

“That’s what we love about the new eShop. We have the power to price our products as we please, with just some basic guidelines from the big guys. The step to this is purely from Nintendos’s side and they clearly see that [their] previous installments have not been up to par. We can set our own pricing and actually continuing on that by setting our own sales whenever we want. It is very close to what Apple and Steam are doing at the moment, and very indie friendly.”

Another encouraging piece of news concerns patching. According to Haveri, there aren’t any “basic payments for each patch”. That allows the studio to “update our game almost as much as we want.”

“They have pushed away all of the old methods that have been established before. Simply put they’ve told us that there are no basic payments for each patch (which were pretty high on most platforms) and that we can update our game almost as much as we want. For indie developers this is huge.”

Least we forget there are some solid eShop titles as well. Factoring those in I'd say this is a really good launch lineup with a lot of variety.

I say decent because IGN scores are typically much higher than the average game reviewer. If we're talking average review score Gamerankings.com has it at.

I just got my Wii U Deluxe + Controller Pro + Mario Bros.

My best buy had 40+ and 28 of them were deluxe. I have to go back and use my rewards zone and shopkick

I'm waiting for k mart to open at 8am to get my wii u on layaway till I get paid on Wednesday. There is nobody else waiting right now. When I waited for the 360 and wii launch the lines where huge.

Same, only I opted for Wiimotes and nunchucks. Not too familiar with Pro Controller. Seemed to be lacking the more innovative motion-based gameplay of the Wii.

got my deluxe set along with nsmru & the wii remote plus. just waiting for the update to download & install. sucks its only wireless... they should of added the eithernet port. so the downloads go faster. i have mine about 2 feet from the router.

Downloads would have been slow regardless since their servers are getting hammered. Having a 5GB update at launch is probably the dumbest thing I have seen a company do in the history of gaming.

You can always get a wii lan adapter. Just plug that into the usb on the wii u and the other end the ethernet which will run to the router. A lot of people are going this route since the wii u lacks the ethernet port and they feel better having a solid direct connection! I'm going to be picking up a rocketfish lan adapter later at best buy for $19.99

thats why i got the deluxe set. i will be getting an external hdd soon. since, the wii u can handle upto 2tb.

This thing eat up so much plug space. I have to plug the Wii U + a space for the ac tablet + an external hdd... My Ps3 takes one, Xbox 360 takes 2, home theater including tv takes 2 and cable box takes one. I have 8 sockets on my Monster Home Theater Powercenter.
