I was going to go with S590 but I am going to hang onto my S570 because for the last 2 years its done its job flawlessly and there is no need for an upgrade not at this time anyway.

Hi,
I'd like to hear what people's thoughts are on the 390 vs 590 vs 790. First, I want a player that supports DSD out over HDMI, which all the models do (yes, I still listen to SACDs). Buying something as expensive as the Oppo simply doesn't make sense because I'm paying for a DAC that I'm never going to use -- I'll always be using the one in my A/V receiver. On paper the 390 looks identical to the 590 except that the 390 doesn't do 3D. This isn't an issue for me because I don't have a 3D TV. But are there any other performance issues? The Dual Core Processor in the 790 is supposed to make it load significantly faster. The 790 also does 16 Bit video processing. Does that actually make a difference in video quality? I have no problem paying more for the 590 or 790 if they do deliver better video quality than the 390 and/or are more reliable. But I obviously don't want to be a sucker and pay for features that make no difference/I'm never going to use. |

Ordered the S590 for $98 at Amazon - $5 off $25 coupon thru Facebook = $93. I think this player will do for now to replace my S350 and S360.

$98 on Amazon, just grabbed it with GC and Amazon Visa Reward Points.
Will replace my S350 I've had since 2008. That one's still working fine, but the slow load times get annoying. Will also be nice to have the Amazon and Netflix apps on the Bluray player too so I don't have to use my game consoles which are noisier. I've also had issues with the Xbox Amazon app buffering a ton lately--switch to the PS3 and it works fine. But I hate using it for video since I have to use the controller as I don't want to shell out for a remote adapter for my Harmony remote. |

I also just picked this up, hoping the Amazon app buffers nicely. That along with SACD support was the big selling point for me.
Quick Edit: Am I the only one who thought the CNET reviewer had rocks for brains? I mean they put the Panasonic ahead of the S590 pretty much solely on the graphical user interface. But then he writes off the fact that the Panny doesn't play SACD, some other file types and even ripped DVD's? WTH?! Dude, you have some serious Sony hate going on then. That isn't objective at all.

My lg bluray player finally died on me this week
LG customer service sucked. Actually wanted me to pay 70 bucks to have them fix it I laughed at them. Only had it for 3 years. The player just automatically turns off everytime I power it on. Anyways I had best buys set aside a Sony bluray 3d player. The one on this thread to pick up in a few hours. Please tell me its a good bluray player With faster play capability and better sound |

Man this site drives me nuts.. Just when I have my mind set on a BR player , I come here and see all this good about the 590 :/
Here were the 4 I was looking at, It will more than likely never be used for 3d, since its going to just be paired with whatever 40" I end up buying for the bedroom, but its possible Just wondering if anyone is familiar with any of these , minus the 590 of course http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....0266503&catId= Last edited by CoMaToast; 11-25-2012 at 03:56 PM. |

I can't comment on the Samsung units, if 3D doesn't matter at all you may want to look at the Sony BDP-S390 as well. However I've seen some pretty good deals on the 590 as of late.

meh, the 590 is $10 more.. Worth it to me.. Even tho I wont be watching 3D NOW, It might still be used later.. But the thing I was questioning, was do the others , and even mid level BR players decode , DTS HDMA, or just true HD.. I just find it odd that they dont have both

Maybe someone can back me up on this, or send me to a better link that explains the benefits of sending LPCM vs bitstreaming to receiver? I don't think the Sony converts to LPCM, but honestly I don't entirely undertand the advantages to doing that. Right now I'm using the Analog multi-channel outs on my Pioneer with an older Yamaha receiver; so I'm probably not the expert at explaining pro-s and cons to some of the various digital delivery methods.

FYI, make sure to downlaod the firmware update for the 350/390. It fixes color problems with RGB output.

Been using mine for close to 2 weeks now. Super pleased with it. Load times are a bit improvement, not getting some error messages loading discs (Alien Anthology, Prometheus) etc. that i got on my old S350 about internet content not working etc.
Amazon streaming has been flawless. Not a single re-buffering while watching so far. |
