The main issues is that the TV wont display images from DirecTv. I get either a "not supported mode" or a "weak or no signal" message with a black screen and the little green box witht he message in it. I can hear the audio.
I am thinking the tv is having a hard time processing 1080p? Cause if I go to a non-HD channel, like 232, it comes up right away. But most other channels I have to trick it into coming on by switiching between video modes on the Onkyo repeatedly. Once it works though, its good until I shut it off, then have to start the whole crappy process the next day. Am I crazy? doesnt my tv and my receiver have the capability to handle that kinda image? (on a side note i first became aware of the 1080p issue back when i tried to order a PPV movie and it wouldnt display a picture, only sound) The same goes for the PS3, but now instead of seeing the same message as above and being able to trick it into coming on by switching the video modes, it stays gray. I can hear the audio. I am wondering if I need a new receiver because it isnt able to switch video to the tv properly, or since its 6 yrs old doesnt handle 1080p(?) I did do your suggestion several months ago and move around and test the HDMI cables. They seem fine |

Do you think its excessive that the Samsung rep, in an effort to correct the "not supported mode" message on my tv, says that I need to connect my DirecTv receiver directly to the tv using HDMI, then run an HDMI out to the Onkyo so that the audio goes to the receiver, and then still run an HDMI from the Onkyo to the tv for all other video sources?
I thought the point of the receiver 9onkyo) was to run everything into it, and then one cable out to the tv, so it acts as a brain for everything, instead of running stuff all over the place |

No. In fact I only had time last night to go through the DirecTv menus and verify the settings before I had to run out to see Django.
I didnt notice anything that prohibited the 1080P in the on screen menu in settings. I was about to look into my TV's settings when I discovered that the remote, which I never use, needed AAA batteries and we had none. Grabbed some after the movie, but it was too late to deal with it. Will look into it later. |

Anyway, I went home and this is what I did: (I am gonna copy and paste this to my personal thread as well)(also use short bullet points)
1. Turned on TV and went to channel 232 which is not HD. TV comes on NP 2. Tried to go to 206 which is ESPN HD- no image and same message 3. Went back to 232 so I could see the on screen menu and in settings unchecked the 1080p box (in the DirecTv HD DVR) 4. went back to ESPN HD and it came on. So I assumed the problem was fixed. WRONG. 5. I turned TV off and on and it still started off with a weak / no signal message. I went to the menu, it still was unchecked. When I tried out of curiosity to re-check the 1080p, it wont even let me now and automatically tells me my tv doesnt support it. 6. PS3 still has only audio. so tomorrow I will be working out in morning, going to return presents at mall, then taking apart my HT and testing some wires before I make a major purchase. |

Ok, so here is another line of questioning:
1. when is the best time to buy a tv/ I was under the impression its around Feb or March after they announce the new models. 2. Is the CES convention in January, and how much lag time is there between the introduction of new models and when they his the shelves? I am guessing prices are lowest at this point. 3. what kind of markdowns do we see? Like a 2400 tv for 2100? or less? |
