Default Sharp Elite 70" owners. I would like your input

I am going to purchase the 70" Elite.

Today, I was at a major TV retailer and found a 70" open box that they are selling for $4999.99 which I felt was a great price.

After watching for a while and found nothing wrong, the TV was turned off. I then looked over the panel very closely and this is what I saw: A very small crease in the panel. The crease is the size and shape like someone's thumb nail with a very small indentation. It is not noticeable from a foot away and not noticeable while the TV is on.

Is this something I should stay from or is it nothing and worth the savings of $800 over a boxed set?????

Is the crease on the panel or the frame?

I would like some serious input to my situation:

I am going to get a 70" and have a great price of $6200 shipped and ready to go BUT here is my problem. I know where I can pick up a new Elite 70" from a major retailer for $4500.00 plus tax.

Here is the situation:

The TV has a slight indentation about 2/3rds from the top of the screen, about 6" from the right side, around 1/2" long and looks like the end of a thumb nail was pushed into the panel.

I placed Baraka in the player and watched. It was never noticeable until that area had gone to white and nothing was moving. I can barely see it from 14 feet away. No one else watching would even notice it.

This would be a saving of $1350.00 (after taxes) savings from the best pricing that I have so far. I know some of you would NEVER pick up a set with that flaw but WOULD YOU?

My guess is I could live with the flaw that would not be seen that much but not sure??????????

What say you?

IF you are sure you can live with this slight flaw and IF they still are offering the full 2 year warranty coverage then $4500 is a killer deal on the 70" Elite...

If the indentation is as inconspicuous as you saw, I'd grab the set and not look back. I love my Elite...

As I stated it was never a floor model. I know the salesman who sold the set. His customer took the set home and had it a very short time. It was too big. So, they returned the set and purchased the 60"

All warranties, etc are valid.

The small flaw is not noticeable. It is slightly when in a very white scene with no motion going on but it is noticeable because I am straining to see it.

In the deal I also received the remote, manual and 2 new sets of 3D glasses. I did not take the set out of the store. I did purchase only to hold it until I finally make up my mind which is why I posted.

There were a few members that said if in the future that crease causes a problem with the set, Sharp may not warranty it. That is my major concern.

I have tried calling the Elite pro line for the last few days to discuss it only to hear that they are closed because of weather. This make me concerned. Are they laying off employees to go BK and if so, what happens to warranties?

Ask the sales person what is the store return policy. Some stores double the manufacturers warranty. If you have it use AMEX they will double the manufacturers warranty. Square trade also provides warranty for large flat screens. I think you have to purchase the warrant through Costco.

Not sure any of this is helpful. I know we would all like to save $1350 but I'm not sure its worth the headache. If there is physical damage on the set. Sharp has every right to deny your warranty.

See if the sales person can get a manager to put it in writing that it has a full warranty and it is being sold with cosmetic flaw that does not affect the quality of the picture etc.

Mastercard also double the Manufacturers Warranty. I'd get a new one if you really insist on having this tv or be patient in the coming months when the new sets come out the Elite may drop in price a bit. Just remember, Sharp is bankrupt and never fixed the day one problems with this tv for 1 1/2 years now and NO new Elites are planned.

The Sharp Elite is pretty good, but not that good. Stealing a riff from the Kuro line was a lousy move. Don't get fooled.

If you can wait about three months, you will see much better deals, even on this particular unit.

As a follow up to the $4500 70" Elite that I purchased from BB but did not take delivery as of yet.

I called Sharp Elite today regarding the small crease in the panel: If anything fails because of that small 1/2" crease such as: pixels die underneath, a small line/crack is created, etc., etc., the warranty will not cover it.

Today, I head back to BB and cancel the order.

Thanks forum members for your input. You will make me spend more $$$$ but could have saved me from a massive head ache in the future.

PLUS, I had Sharp run the serial number on the set. It is a 2011, August build. Tomorrow will make that set a two year old model as far as I am concerned.

WOW

That was a LONG time for that thing to be hanging around. I wonder how many hours were really on that thing.

Glad you kept your head down. For those kind of bucks, you definitely deserve way more bang.

.
I see a couple possibilities for the 60 and 70" Elites

1) Sharp comes out with a new Gen 2 model making the price drop on the Gen 1s

2) Sharp eliminates the Elite series, goes BK, etc. making the gen 1 Elite rise in price

It is a gamble but since CES is opening soon, there MIGHT be an indication what will happen

A 4k Elite that is better with cyan and banding would be totally kick-butt!

Maybe the series will even be seen as a value compared to $10,000 55" OLED sets.

Sorry to hijack the thread; are Elites sold in the UK? I can't find anywhere that carries them.

I have to disagree with you, I own this tv and the Panasonic VT50. When this Tv is calibrated properly (which in my case, I hired a ISF Certified worker to calibrate both TV's) Sharp just blows out the VT50 out of the water!!! It literally has DARKER BLACK LEVELS, better color accuracy, clearer picture and a much better 3D performance. There's a reason why this TV is called the ELITE
