There's no comparison between the original M1 and the OMD-28 in terms of crossovers, driver designs and cabinet design. Where the M1 might actually be "better" is in its more traditional - as far as that goes - bipolar design. There were a lot of times with my 28s that I couldn't quite make out quiet dialogue, and felt like I was missing some imaging. In that regard, the 28s could never equal the M1, or any other direct radiator, for that matter. I do think the $1500+ that he's looking for is pretty ambitious...I would imagine $1000 - $1200 for something like that, provided they're in good condition.

The sound and the dynamic is unbeleivable, the first time i heard them it was when i bought my M7Si speakers, and beleive me i was like in another world The only reason i did not bought them at that time was the amp i had never been able to drive them at all, as they really need 2 Monoblocks. Now the OMD 28 design is different from the M1 and that is normal, because the M1 is a bipolar speakers while the OMD 28 is an omni, adding to that the marketing influence in the design issue, but what realy matter is the sound. Andrew was a Junior when Ian designed the M1 Speakers line and the M1 will always be a classic while the OMD 28 is a very good speakers but they are not in the same league of the M1 at all. You know i am even considering seriously to buy the M1, but what can i do if i need to replace the drivers ??? i am sure there is no parts available for the M1 speakers unless i am mistaking !! i realy don't know. I am asking my self what is the poking on both speakers and at the same place !!. |

I've seen this happen to many brands, Infinity's zenith was the Nudell era with the IRS V, now they make nothing in that class...Altec VOT is still considered a class A speaker but Altec as it once existed is no more. I could go on for a minute (NHT and the 3.3, Energy original Veritas, just to name a few). It's a business, and you give the people what they want. If they want smaller, more attractive speakers you do that...even if some sound quality is sacrificed. Klipsch has even gone that route with limiting heritage line (only made to order now), not that the other speakers are inferior persay (palladiums, and the RF-7's are great speakers indeed) but you may be hard pressed to get a KHorn owner to trade for Palladium p-37's or a Cornwall owner to trade for Rf-83's. Check my frequency response plot of my CW's - I was surprised how flat it was. Mirage changed designers and philosophies, that's why flagship models disappear...heck, I even here that Bose plans to discontinue the 901 (that's only hearsay - due to the lack of places to put the active EQ). It just happens Goat.

The M1 was originally designed by Kevin Voecks (of Snell, and Revel fame) and completed by Ian. This was the golden era of Mirage and audio in general. the designer of the 28's (Andrew) went in a totally different direction.
There was a time, before your time...that people didn't mind having big speakers in their living spaces (Duntechs, Dunleavy, Apogee, and others come to mind). that's when sound was priority #1. now the decorative factor rules in most cases.

The size of the M1 was one of the reasons why the M7si was a hot seller, you were able to get 75% of the sound in 30% of the size. The M7si was really the only one of the M series that had any WAF factor. It was actually a nice looking speaker at the time and I sold many to women. NOT saying it's a girly speaker!

HAHA!
The M1s look more attractive at a 1250 price. I'm sure many on here would snag them at that price...

He told me that it was the Tweeter and that was the original design. I find it odd that the Tweeter would be pressed up against the fabric like that, but what do I know? Velociti or dolsey01 do you guys know if that is normal. |
