Here're my current goals for this round of upgrades (the next year or two): * New phono stage * New line stage * New power amps * Acoustic room treatments * New racks * Several dedicated AC lines to my listening room * Power cables to match my Frey interconnects and speaker cables Candidates for the round after that include: * New turntable and arm * Equi=tech balanced power system * New speakers * New AC/interconnect/speaker cables Will the madness ever end?!

Man! I am so glad that Vinyl and analog didn't really grow on me, Because I can never justify getting any other component that costs than my speakers. But that's just me... What Nordost speaker cables and IC's do you have now? When I moved my 2-ch to the living room, I made it a point to add a dedicated 20amp circuit there prior to setting things up. And like you, I am looking to getting some acoustic treatments next, although the room sounds pretty good as it is already. |

I haven't given it a lot of thought, because replacing my Spires is quite a ways off. Something mid-range from Wilson Audio (up to, say, the Maxx 3) or Maggie 20.7s, or the bigger Focals. Maybe the Martin Logan CLX will be next (although I'll probably need to add a couple of subs too). I expect my next speakers to list for around $50K (I like to make BIG upgrades!).

My room sounds pretty good also, but I know there's room(!) for improvement. Room treatments aren't as sexy as component upgrades, but are arguably just as important. I see a bunch of Real Traps stuff in my room in the future! There's some slap echo I'd like to tame, and a bit of bass boominess at certain frequencies and volume levels.

As far as digital is concerned, the tweaks and add ons aren't as critical IMO as those for analog but adding a music server and the like just opens a new dimention and funtionality to music listening as it is so easy to switch tracks on the fly. The freys are cool! Do you have the version 2's? I had the frey inter connects and Speaker cables at my place for a bit. They are thicker a lot thicker than my heimdalls(about as thick as the valhallas mk1) and rightfully so as the dealer said the new freys are at the same level(as well as price) as the old valhallas! I'm going to stave off on posting the differences as I don't want to make this into a speaker wire thread! |

Wow! You guys are talking some serious coinage here!
I've done well so far and I know upgrades are a part of the future, but I can't see myself spending that much, although if I had the money it would likely be another matter. What turntable would you be considering Rich? And Rhett...I agree with Rich that digital can get get just as expensive.

As my Forsell gets older, I can't help but wonder how many more years it has left in it. I bought it new in 1995 (or thereabouts), and although there aren't many moving parts, there's the PSU and motor to consider, and spare parts aren't that easy to find! Also, it's a 240V @ 50Hz model so I have to go through some shenanigans to make it spin at the correct speed. I'd like to dispense with that nonsense and have a native 110V @ 60Hz turntable! If my Forsell bites the bullet before I'm ready (read: before I've saved up enough) I'll have to come down a notch or two in my aspirations, in which case I could see me being quite happy with (say) an SME Model 20/3 with a matching Series V tone arm. I had one of the latter many years ago and the build quality is exemplary! (One of the things I think is very important at this level is product and manufacturer longevity.)

One of the benefits of being in the A/V industry is being able to get industry pricing on many products. Usually it's a set % off of retail for a manufacturer's entire line.

Yeah, there's a few SF owners up in arms over the whole thing, in my readings through the many HT forums out there.

I could never "get" the Wilson mystique. I heard the Audio Watt Pupps many moons ago and it sounded so disjointed. It was in a well treated room powered by Classe Mono Blocks and Separates. But to each his own I guess... There are plenty of speakers in the 20-50k range, each having their own strength and weaknesses. I do like the Magico Q5 and the Dynaudio Consequence UE but I know it's more than 50k and it requires an amp with a lot of balls to power them... |

The only thing I am doing this year is getting rid of my CD mega changer and SACD Player and replaceing it all with a Bryston BDP-2 and BDA-2 I should have them soon. Right now I am using the loner BDP-1 and BDA-1 to see how it works.
Oh yeah, I also replaced my Sony Blu-ray mega changers (the 7000ES) with an Oppo 103 because the mega changers jammed 2 times in less than 2 years. I got sick of taking them out of the rack, removing my movies and then sending it in to be fixed. My old pioneer doesn't play all the movies now a days. No more updates.
